MALMÖ, Sweden, Sept. 3, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- IKEA has launched a unique in-store experience called IKEA Open House in three major cities: Melbourne, Chengdu, and Beijing. The initiative aims to demonstrate how small, affordable changes can significantly enhance the living space, making homes more conducive to various activities such as work, creativity, and relaxation.
In an era where homes are expected to serve multiple roles, IKEA emphasizes that creating a comfortable and functional living environment does not necessarily require a large budget. The company’s Global Commercial Manager, Javier Quiñones, from the Ingka Group (IKEA), explains, "People usually don't aim for the perfect home, but the one that feels easier to live in. We focus on offering accessible and affordable solutions to help people make their homes more functional and enjoyable."
To illustrate this concept, IKEA has partnered with Stockholm-based miniature artist Christopher Robin Nordström (@TokyoBuild) to create handcrafted miniature homes in public spaces across the selected cities. Each miniature home, built at a 1:12 scale, reflects the unique character and culture of the city where it is displayed.
In Melbourne, the BILLY bookcase is a focal point, holding tiny novels and art prints, while subtly incorporating elements of the city’s sporting culture. The METOD kitchen takes center stage in Chengdu and Beijing, showcasing how homes are shaped by different cultural, routine, and personal preferences.
Christopher Nordström elaborates, "When you build in miniature, you can't include everything. Every object has to earn its place. You quickly realize that a home isn't defined by how much it contains, but by the things people choose to make room for."
While the miniature homes bring the concept to life in public spaces, IKEA Open House continues in stores from late August through September. Visitors can explore a range of storage and organization solutions, inspirational room settings, special offers, and simple, affordable ideas designed to make their homes feel calmer, more functional, and better suited to everyday life.
The initiative underscores IKEA’s commitment to helping customers create homes that are both beautiful and practical, regardless of their budget. By focusing on small, strategic changes, IKEA aims to inspire people to make their living spaces more enjoyable and efficient.
