MEMPHIS, TN, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Memphis in May International Festival has announced the dates and locations for the 2027 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (WCBCC), marking a significant milestone in the city’s annual celebration. The event, which has been a cornerstone of the Memphis in May International Festival for decades, will return to Liberty Park from May 12 to May 15, 2027. This year, the festival will celebrate its 50th anniversary, inviting more than 50,000 attendees to witness the world's largest pork barbecue cooking contest.
Barbecue enthusiasts and teams from across the globe are encouraged to apply for the competition, which will feature a diverse array of categories, including traditional championship pork categories such as ribs, shoulder, or whole hog. For the first time, the event will introduce the Open Fire World Championship, challenging competitors to showcase their live-fire cooking skills using a variety of proteins and techniques beyond traditional barbecue. Additionally, the Patio Porker Division will offer amateur teams the opportunity to compete in a ribs-only contest, while the Junior World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest will welcome young pitmasters aged 9 to 17.
Applications for the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest will open on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at www.memphisinmay.org/barbecue. The festival organizers are excited to see the participation of teams from 27 states and seven foreign countries, as they did during the 2026 celebration, which featured over 200 teams.
In addition to the WCBCC, the Great American River Run, including its 5k, 10k, and Half-Marathon events, will return to scenic downtown Memphis. Registration for these events will also open on November 5, 2026, at memphisinmay.org/river-run. These activities are part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival, which has been recognized globally for excellence, having earned more than 250 prestigious Pinnacle Awards from the International Festivals and Events Association.
Founded in 1977 as a 501(c)(3) organization, the Memphis in May International Festival has been a driving force in promoting and celebrating Memphis culture, fostering economic growth, and enhancing international awareness through education.
