Höegh Evi and PETROS Develop Kuching LNG Terminal in Sarawak

KUCHING, Malaysia, Sept. 30, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Höegh Evi, a Norwegian leader in floating energy infrastructure, and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), the state-owned oil and gas company of Sarawak, Malaysia, have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to jointly develop the Kuching Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal as part of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH) development. This project is expected to contribute significantly to Sarawak's energy security and support growing energy demand, enabling the development of new industries in Kuching.

The LNG Terminal, which will include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), mooring infrastructure, subsea and onshore pipelines, and onshore receiving facilities, is a key catalyst for the development of the KLCH. The project is being developed with the aim of delivering its first gas by the end of 2029, with PETROS and Höegh Evi continuing to assess opportunities to accelerate delivery in line with growing demand. The terminal will support Sarawak's evolving energy needs and provide a range of services, including small-scale LNG distribution, truck loading, bunkering, storage, and reloading activities.

Höegh Evi, with a 50-year history as a global leader in floating energy infrastructure, has one of the world's largest fleets of FSRUs for importing natural gas. The company is building the infrastructure needed to make the transition to a low-carbon future, with floating terminals for ammonia and hydrogen import, the world's first floating ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker, and services for carbon transport and permanent storage.

The partnership brings together PETROS' role as the Master Developer of KLCH, driving the development of an energy and infrastructure ecosystem that will support Sarawak's next phase of growth, with Höegh Evi's experience as owner, developer, and operator of FSRUs and maritime energy infrastructure. The project is expected to strengthen local capabilities and support Sarawak's long-term energy development through knowledge sharing, training, and skills development.

Höegh Evi's global team of 900 employees, both at sea and onshore, will play a crucial role in the development and operation of the Kuching LNG Terminal. The company's expertise in floating energy infrastructure will be instrumental in delivering a flexible and adaptable solution to meet Sarawak's evolving energy needs.
