HERNDON, VA, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Hive Pro, a Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) company, announced that its threat and vulnerability research unit, HiveForce Labs, discovered four critical Windows vulnerabilities in Microsoft's October 2026 Patch Tuesday update. This release, published on October 13, fixed a staggering 1,413 Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs), marking a new record and beating September's previous high of 974 by roughly 45 percent. Windows alone accounted for 1,102 of these fixes, with one notable zero-day, CVE-2026-96951, already exploited in the wild.

The four vulnerabilities, all affecting tools that come pre-installed with every Windows machine, include:

- CVE-2026-83923: An OpenSSH for Windows path traversal vulnerability that allows remote code execution (CVSS 8.8). - CVE-2026-88157: Another OpenSSH for Windows heap overflow issue leading to remote code execution (CVSS 8.8). - CVE-2026-83754: A third OpenSSH for Windows heap overflow vulnerability with a CVSS score of 7.5. - CVE-2026-69968: A Windows libarchive (tar.exe) path traversal and tampering issue (CVSS 6.5).

Lone highlighted the importance of these vulnerabilities, noting that they affect a critical user base that handles sensitive information.

The record volume of CVE disclosures is no accident. Between June 2024 and June 2026, monthly CVE disclosures grew by about 145 percent. Microsoft has credited large language models for much of this year's discovery volume, with the company now passing 4,000 CVEs in 2026, with two months still to go.

AI is accelerating the discovery process, both for defenders and attackers.

For these four CVEs, interim mitigations include avoiding recursive scp and sftp downloads from untrusted servers, extracting outside archives as a standard user in an empty folder, removing the symbolic-link privilege from accounts that unpack third-party archives, and keeping Windows' built-in terminal support switched on. Hive Pro recommends a Mitigate First, Patch Faster approach to a patch load no team can clear in a single cycle.

Hive Pro customers can act today by discovering whether the four vulnerabilities are present, validating their defenses against these vulnerabilities, and prioritizing the zero-day, CVE-2026-96951, which is already in the wild.

The Hive Pro platform now offers safe breach and attack simulation (BAS) exploits for all four CVEs, allowing teams to test whether their controls stop an attacker. A BAS simulation for CVE-2026-96951, the Windows Shell Mark of the Web bypass on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list, is also available for Hive Pro customers.
