FRANKLIN, Tenn., Oct. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The Foster 50 Challenge, a national initiative aimed at increasing foster participation in animal shelters and rescues across the United States, has seen significant success in its second year. Over 300 shelters and rescues participated in the three-month challenge, which ran this summer. The initiative, led by PEDIGREE Foundation and including Maddie's Fund, Adopt a Pet, MuttNation Foundation, ASPCA, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, Mutual Rescue, and Outcomes for Pets Consulting, reported impressive results.

According to the challenge, more than 83,500 animals were placed into foster homes, marking a 14% increase from the start of the challenge. This increase in foster placements has contributed to a 28.5% drop in the number of animals staying 60+ days in shelters. Among organizations with annual intakes over 5,000, the number of long-stay animals dropped by 34%. The challenge also saw nearly 19,000 community members become new foster caregivers, more than doubling last year's challenge.

Shelter Animals Count data shows that 2025 ended with more dogs and cats in shelters than when it began, and mid-year data from 2026 indicates a similar trend. Fostering offers a powerful way for communities to help, giving pets a temporary home while opening up valuable shelter space for other pets in need. Ultimately, fostering paves the way for more adoptions by giving pets a chance to thrive in a home environment and helping shelters learn more about their personalities to find the right adoptive families.

The Foster 50 coalition conducted the challenge to build and strengthen foster programming across the country. Participating organizations reported the following impact: - 108,200 animals adopted from participating shelters and rescues during the challenge period, including animals adopted directly from shelters and those that spent time in foster care. - Nearly 19,000 community members became new foster caregivers.

PEDIGREE Foundation and Maddie's Fund each awarded $100,000 in grant funding to help the recipients expand, improve, and innovate their existing foster programming or launch new foster programs. Adopt a Pet awarded four Senior Pet Data Grants of $5,000 each, totaling $20,000, to collect additional data on fostering and senior pets. MuttNation Foundation awarded $20,000 across four Love Harder Grants of $5,000 each, focusing on dogs that tend to have a harder time getting adopted, such as seniors, pit mixes, large breeds, and dogs with disabilities.

PEDIGREE Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 2008 by Mars Petcare, maker of PEDIGREE® food for dogs. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than 6,400 grants and over $15.3 million to U.S. and Canadian shelters and rescues that help dogs in need. The foundation's Canadian grant program, launched in 2022, has provided more than $465,000 CAD to local shelters and rescues.

The Foster 50 Challenge continues to make a significant impact on the lives of animals and the communities that care for them. By fostering collaboration and providing resources, the initiative is helping to reduce the number of animals in shelters and increase their chances of finding loving homes.
