Edible Garden, a leader in controlled environment agriculture (CEA), has introduced what it claims to be the first verified USDA Organic basil grown using CEA methods to Wakefern Food Corp. for distribution to ShopRite stores. This expansion of the retailer’s distribution network comes ahead of the Labor Day weekend, a time when demand for fresh herbs surges due to grilling and meal preparation.
The new product line leverages Edible Garden’s controlled environment agriculture platform, which is designed to ensure greater consistency, quality, and year-round availability of organic produce. The basil is produced in accordance with USDA National Organic Program standards and is independently verified by an accredited organic certifier.
Jim Kras, CEO of Edible Garden, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “Bringing this first-of-its-kind USDA Organic basil to ShopRite through our exclusive program represents a crucial expansion of our organic fresh herb offerings. It aligns with our commitment to innovation and providing consumers with organic integrity, freshness, and locally grown convenience.”
The exclusive program also utilizes Wakefern’s backhaul logistics network, which allows Edible Garden’s products to be picked up as part of existing transportation routes. This integration is expected to enhance supply-chain efficiency and reduce unnecessary food miles, supporting Edible Garden’s Zero-Waste Inspired® mission.
Kras further stated, “We are proud to expand our relationship with Wakefern and its supermarket members, who have a strong reputation for delivering high-quality products. This program demonstrates the value of our controlled environment agriculture platform and localized distribution capabilities, while providing ShopRite shoppers with a differentiated fresh herb option.”
