Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recently visited Vienna to urge renewed commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to discuss the challenges facing the international community. The visit, which included a speech at Austria’s SDG Dialogforum and a meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, came against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts, growing risks from artificial intelligence, and worsening climate impacts.
Ban Ki-moon, who spoke at the SDG Dialogforum alongside Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Special Envoy for Global Affairs in the Austrian Federal Chancellery, emphasized the continued relevance of the SDGs as a shared blueprint for a more resilient and sustainable future. With less than four years remaining until 2030, he stressed the responsibility of governments to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs and ensure that the ambitions of the Agenda 2030 remain a priority beyond 2030.
Austria, which ranks sixth globally in the Sustainable Development Report 2026, has made significant progress in implementing the SDGs over the past seven years. The Austrian Federal Chancellery and the Ban Ki-moon Foundation have worked closely to advance the SDGs through the SDG Dialogforum, which convenes decision-makers from government, public administration, business, academia, and civil society.
During his visit, Ban Ki-moon met with Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria. He congratulated Austria on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.
The minister, in turn, expressed Austria’s commitment to the SDGs and the United Nations.
Ban Ki-moon’s message in Vienna was clear: progress on the SDGs must accelerate, but the commitment to leaving no one behind cannot end in 2030. The international community must continue building on the Agenda's achievements while confronting the challenges that remain.
The Ban Ki-moon Foundation, which works to foster leadership for the implementation of the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement, has reached more than 2.8 million people worldwide through partnerships with governments, civil society, academia, and international organizations. The foundation continues to inspire today’s leaders and empower young changemakers, ensuring that the SDGs remain a priority for the international community.
