DURHAM, CA, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Zakat Foundation of America is set to distribute 13,200 pounds of rice to families in North and South Carolina from October 24, 2026, to November 22, 2026. This effort, part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to addressing food insecurity, aims to ease the financial strain on communities hit hard by rising food costs.

Hunger in the Carolinas is on the rise, with Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap analysis estimating that over 1.7 million North Carolinians are food insecure. In South Carolina, the situation is equally concerning, with one in seven residents living in food-insecure households. These numbers reflect the broader challenge of ensuring that families can afford the basic necessities, including food.

The distributions will take place at various locations across the region. On October 24, 2026, at 1:00 pm, the first distribution will occur at Cornwallis Apartments in Durham, North Carolina. On October 26, 2026, two distributions will take place: one at 5:00 pm at 12 Hilltop Dr. in Candler, North Carolina, and another from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Parktown Food Hub in Durham, North Carolina. Additional distributions are scheduled for November 1, 2026, at 2:00 pm at the Islamic Center of the Triad in Greensboro, North Carolina, and on November 8, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Naples Terrace Apartments in Durham, North Carolina. The final distribution will be held on November 22, 2026, at 3:00 pm at MERA Health Fair in Durham, North Carolina.

Rice holds significant cultural importance in many of the communities served by Zakat Foundation of America. A bag of rice can provide a week’s worth of meals, making it a practical and valuable form of relief for families. Through these distributions, the organization aims to provide a dependable foundation for meals, helping to alleviate the pressure on families who are making difficult trade-offs between essential expenses.

Zakat Foundation of America, founded in 2001 by Khalil Demir, operates as a 501(c)3 NGO dedicated to addressing immediate needs and ensuring the self-reliance of the poorest people around the world. The organization conducts humanitarian assistance programs in more than 45 countries across five continents, reflecting its commitment to global humanitarian efforts.

This initiative is part of the organization’s broader mission to support communities facing food insecurity. By providing practical relief in the form of rice, Zakat Foundation of America is helping to ensure that families have access to a staple food that can anchor their meals and provide a sense of stability during challenging times.
