Truist Foundation Funds $4M for Western North Carolina Recovery

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Two years after Hurricane Helene devastated communities across Western North Carolina, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) has announced $4 million in new grants from its Truist Foundation Western North Carolina Recovery and Resiliency Fund. This brings the total investment from the Truist Foundation-supported recovery fund to nearly $19 million, which has been awarded to 18 organizations working to help repair homes, rebuild livelihoods, and address other challenges to recovery.
The grants, which were awarded to 18 organizations in January, cover a range of initiatives, including home repair, environmental restoration, mental health programming, and community resilience projects. The final round of grants was awarded to Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Agriculture and Natural Resources Program, EcoForesters, Inc., Energy Savers Network Incorporated, First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Haywood Habitat for Humanity, Mission Serve, North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Member Services Foundation, North Carolina Baptist Men, North Carolina State University Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Cooperative Extension Office, PIVOTPoint WNC, RiverLink, Rutherford Housing Partnership, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Gillings School of Public Health, Valley Hope Foundation, and WAMY Community Action, Inc.
The Truist Foundation, a private foundation established in 2020, has committed $725 million to support Truist Cares for Western North Carolina, a partnership with the Truist Foundation. The Fund, which has now been fully funded, addresses medium- and long-term needs to help strengthen the region's housing and small businesses. Since its launch, the Fund has awarded grants to organizations working to expand access to safe and affordable housing, strengthen mental health programs, restore local ecosystems, support small businesses, and build resilience across the region.
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, a non-profit organization, mobilizes philanthropy to strengthen communities' ability to withstand disasters and recover equitably when they occur. It provides expert advice and educational resources, supports diverse coalitions, and manages domestic and international disaster funds on behalf of corporations, foundations, and individuals. Through the Truist Foundation Western North Carolina Recovery and Resiliency Fund, CDP addresses medium- and long-term needs to help strengthen the region's housing and small businesses.
The Truist Foundation's support allows CDP to be a partner in community-led efforts to secure a thriving and vibrant future for all. CDP will sunset the Fund in December 2027, although much of the work supported through its grants will continue into 2028.
