Tark Thermal Solutions Launches PCX-DG Series Cooler for Enhanced Semiconductor Testing

News related to:Tark Thermal Solutions · 2 min read

Tark Thermal Solutions has introduced the PCX-DG Series cooler, a significant advancement in thermal management solutions designed to meet the stringent demands of power-cycling applications. This new cooler is engineered to withstand more than 200,000 rapid heating and cooling cycles, making it ideal for use in semiconductor test applications and optical transceiver end-of-line (EOL) testing.

The PCX-DG Series extends Tark Thermal Solutions' PowerCycling PCX platform by incorporating compliant, thermally conductive bonding layers at both ceramic-side interfaces of the thermoelectric module. This dual-compliant bonding design is intended to absorb more of the differential expansion and contraction generated during power cycling, thereby reducing the mechanical stress transferred through the cooler. As a result, the PCX-DG Series is expected to lower the risk of premature thermoelectric cooler (TEC) failure, potentially reducing the total cost of ownership for optical transceiver test-system original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and contract houses.

In semiconductor test applications, the rapid, repeated transitions between hot and cold setpoints across wide temperature swings can be particularly challenging for conventional solder-bonded TECs. These devices are prone to cracking, delamination, and bowing due to the repeated thermal expansion and contraction, often occurring hundreds of thousands of times over the TEC's service life. The PCX-DG Series addresses these issues by using flexible, thermally conductive bonding layers at both the hot and cold interfaces, allowing the TEC to flex slightly with each thermal test cycle. This design significantly reduces the stress transmitted to the brittle solder joints, enhancing the TEC's reliability.

The PCX-DG Series is validated to withstand 200,000+ power cycles without performance degradation, depending on the form factor. It also features a wide temperature range, with a maximum operating temperature of 120°C, making it suitable for applications that operate across a broad temperature window. Additionally, the series retains the solid-state operation and next-generation thermoelectric materials of the broader PCX family, which Tark Thermal Solutions developed for applications requiring high frequency cycling, fast temperature changes, and precise control.

Tark Thermal Solutions offers the PCX-DG Series in multiple package configurations to support different thermal-head, heat-load, socket, and packaging requirements. Current product listings include PCX-DG variants specifically designed for harsh cycling environments and high heat-flux densities. By providing a more durable and reliable solution, the PCX-DG Series aims to support equipment uptime and test throughput, ensuring consistent and precise temperature control in demanding test applications.

The PCX-DG Series is now available in various package configurations. Product specifications, distributor inventory, technical support requests, and quotation options are available through Tark Thermal Solutions and its authorized distributor network.
