STMicroelectronics Introduces Cost-Effective Automotive Image Sensor

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new automotive image sensor, the ST SafeSense VD56GA, aimed at enhancing in-cabin sensing capabilities in vehicles. This sensor is designed to help Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers scale driver and occupant monitoring systems across various vehicle platforms while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
The VD56GA sensor offers a 35% improvement in image sharpness and nearly 60% higher infrared sensitivity compared to its predecessor. It is housed in a compact 1.1 megapixel (MP) format, making it suitable for space-constrained in-cabin camera designs. The sensor integrates a range of embedded image-processing functions, including mirror, crop, dark calibration, auto exposure, and piecewise-linear processing, which simplifies camera design and speeds up development.
According to Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, the VD56GA addresses the need for cost-effective solutions that can be deployed across a broader range of vehicle programs.
The sensor leverages a new backside-illuminated pixel architecture called ST DeepNIR, optimized for infrared imaging. This architecture allows the VD56GA to deliver high modulation transfer function (MTF) sharpness and quantum efficiency, making it the only sensor in its class to achieve this level of combined optical resolution and infrared sensitivity. This capability is particularly useful in challenging conditions, such as under-display camera applications.
Anas Chalak, Market & Technology Analyst at Yole Group, highlighted the importance of cost-effective solutions for driver and occupant monitoring systems.
The VD56GA is designed to help reduce the overall cost of the complete camera module by enabling the use of lower-cost optics, simplified infrared illumination, less demanding optical filtering, and no external image-processing. This translates into a more cost-effective path to deploying driver and occupant monitoring across a broader range of vehicle programs.
Samples of the VD56GA are now available for purchase, and pricing information can be obtained from local ST sales offices. The sensor builds on STMicroelectronics' established presence in automotive imaging and in-cabin sensing, with the company having shipped its 10 millionth automotive image sensor earlier this year.
