SLACAL, the Surplus Line Association of California, has launched a new video series, the Executive Forum, featuring a conversation between Benjamin J. McKay, CEO of SLACAL, and Marc Lipman, President of Lloyd's Americas. The discussion, moderated by SLACAL's Chief Industry & Regulatory Officer David Kodama Jr., delves into key issues affecting the California insurance market, including wildfire risk, artificial intelligence, and new sources of capital.
McKay and Lipman discussed the challenges and opportunities in the surplus lines sector, highlighting how wildfire risk is a critical issue for California. McKay emphasized that the state's insurance troubles stem from a "wildfire crisis, not an insurance crisis," pointing to the impact of Proposition 103, which shaped the market since its enactment. He argued that surplus lines insurance is actually safer than many people believe, underscoring the role of the surplus lines marketplace in providing coverage where traditional insurers may not operate.
Lipman, meanwhile, addressed the outdated notion of surplus lines as a "dumping ground" for risky or difficult-to-insure policies. He stated that this idea no longer holds true, suggesting a more nuanced and dynamic role for surplus lines in the modern insurance landscape. Lipman explained that new sources of capital, including private equity, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth, are increasingly funding the next generation of risk transfer solutions in California.
The conversation also touched on the potential of parametric insurance products developed through Lloyd's Lab. These products aim to provide more immediate and predictable payouts after events like wildfires or earthquakes, offering a more streamlined and efficient approach to disaster recovery. McKay and Lipman highlighted how these tools can enhance the resilience of homeowners and communities in the face of growing natural hazards.
The first episode of the Executive Forum series is now available on SLACAL’s YouTube channel, providing a valuable resource for industry professionals, regulators, and the public. Future episodes, along with additional educational content, will be added to SLACAL's Learning Center, continuing to explore the evolving landscape of California's insurance market.
This inaugural discussion comes at a time when the insurance industry is grappling with the increasing complexity of risks, driven by climate change and technological advancements. As California continues to face significant wildfire risks, the insights provided by McKay and Lipman offer important perspectives on how the industry can adapt and innovate to meet these challenges.
