Rotary District 5130 To Carry 1984 Olympic Torch Relay

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Sep 08, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Rotary District 5130 in Northern California is set to carry the World Polio Torch from October 2 to 24, 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness and support for the global fight against polio. The torch, originally used in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Torch Relay, will travel through communities in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Napa, and Sonoma counties, before concluding in Petaluma on World Polio Day.

The torch has a poignant history, having been carried by Cathy Ritter, a 23-year-old representative of the South Lake Tahoe Women's Center during the 1984 Olympics. More than four decades later, the same torch will pass through the hands of Rotary clubs in District 5130, carrying a message of hope and perseverance in the battle against polio.

Bob Rogers, a Rotarian and polio survivor who serves as the PolioPlus Chair for Rotary District 5130, will lead the relay. Rogers, Cathy's stepdad, will honor her legacy of service and dedication to ending polio. The relay aims to unite communities and highlight Rotary's commitment to eradicating the disease, which has seen significant progress but remains a global health challenge.

Jeff Kolin, Governor of Rotary District 5130, emphasized the significance of the relay. "This relay will unite communities throughout our district around one of Rotary's most important and enduring humanitarian commitments," he said. "Our 46 Rotary Clubs and 3 Rotaract Clubs invite members of the public to join us and experience a unique opportunity to carry a real torch from the 1984 Olympics Torch Relay."

The World Polio Torch Relay will begin with an opening ceremony in Crescent City and conclude with a celebration in Petaluma. Along the route, the torch will be passed through various events, including walks, runs, bicycle rides, community gatherings, and ceremonial handoffs. Vehicle transfers will ensure the torch reaches all designated areas.

Rotary District 5130 encourages public participation. Members of the public can support the campaign by donating through participating Rotary clubs' individual Raise for Rotary fundraising pages. All donations will benefit PolioPlus through The Rotary Foundation.
