Rhode Island Energy (RIE) customers are among the first in the United States to benefit from real-time energy monitoring through a new app called Sense. The initiative, which began in September 2026, aims to empower consumers with detailed insights into their electricity usage, helping them identify areas for savings and more informed decision-making.
Through the Sense app, RIE customers with newly installed advanced meters can monitor their home’s electricity consumption in real-time. Compatible meters allow users to download the app to their smartphones, providing a comprehensive view of their energy use without additional equipment. The app offers a host of features designed to increase awareness and promote energy efficiency.
Users can track their energy consumption throughout the day, receive alerts for unusual activity, and gain personalized insights. For instance, customers can observe how their energy use fluctuates when heating or cooling systems activate, or identify appliances that seem to be running longer than expected. This real-time data helps users understand the impact of their daily activities on energy bills and encourages them to make more efficient choices.
Greg Cornett, President of RIE, expressed excitement about the new technology, stating, "We are committed to providing our customers with the tools and information they need to manage their energy use effectively. The Sense app complements our advanced meter program by offering a real-time view of electricity usage, which helps customers better understand their consumption and identify opportunities to save energy and money."
The Sense app offers several key benefits: - Real-time energy use tracking: Customers can see their home’s electricity consumption at any moment. - Insights into energy patterns: The app identifies the energy usage of common devices, helping customers understand where their electricity goes. - Personalized savings opportunities: Users receive guidance on reducing energy waste and lowering bills. - Long-term tracking: Customers can review energy use trends over time and see the impact of changes in their home. - Customizable alerts: Notifications inform customers of changes in energy use, such as equipment left running or unexpected increases in consumption.
Mike Phillips, CEO of Sense, highlighted the app’s potential, saying, "Most people don't have a clear view of their home’s electricity usage until the bill arrives. The Sense app provides timely and useful information that can help customers make more informed decisions and reduce unnecessary energy use."
RIE has enabled Sense across the majority of Landis + Gyr Revelo meters in its service area. Customers with meters in range of household Wi-Fi can activate the Sense app and start monitoring their energy use immediately. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices, with instructions to download it via the Apple App Store or Google Play.
"By leveraging advanced metering infrastructure, we are not only enhancing the reliability and affordability of the electric system but also empowering our customers to play a proactive role in managing their energy consumption," added Phillips.
