Retired Army Officer Jay Bowen Elected as National Commander of The American Legion

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 3, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Three Jay Bowen, of Colorado Springs, has been elected as the national commander of The American Legion, the world's largest veterans organization. Bowen's election took place at the 107th national convention of the organization.

Bowen's 20-year military career included service in Operation Desert Shield, during which he worked in radar and missile maintenance on HAWK and Patriot systems. After his military service, he transitioned to the private sector, holding roles such as distribution management and telecommunications engineering. He also managed a preventive maintenance program for baked beans manufacturer Bush Brothers & Company and later worked in federal defense contracting. Bowen holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Arkansas University, where he graduated summa cum laude, and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University.

Bowen has been actively involved in The American Legion at various levels, including post, district, department, and national positions. He is a Paid Up For Life member of Neal Thomas Jr.-Centennial Post 209 in Colorado Springs and has served as the commander of the Department of Colorado. At the national level, Bowen has held significant roles such as chairman of the Veterans Employment and Education Commission, chairman of the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, and chairman of the Membership and Post Activities Committee.

As national commander, Bowen aims to enhance The American Legion's mission of service. His theme, "Be Part of the Solution (B.P.O.T.S.)," encourages members to actively engage in their communities, support veterans and their families, and advance the organization's legislative priorities. A strong advocate for The American Legion's "Be the One" mission to prevent veteran suicide, Bowen emphasizes the importance of collective action and community involvement.

Bowen and his wife, Jackie, have two sons, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His election marks a new chapter in The American Legion's history, as he leads the organization into its next phase of service.
