Peoria Riverfront Museum opens "We Remember" exhibition marking 9/11 anniversary

In Peoria, Illinois, a somber yet reflective event marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Peoria Riverfront Museum, in collaboration with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, has unveiled a groundbreaking exhibition, "We Remember: Stories from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum," which opens to the public on September 5, 2026, and will run until April 11, 2027.

The exhibition, a first-of-its-kind in the nation, features an array of objects that have never been publicly displayed, including a FDNY helmet retrieved from a firefighter rescued from the rubble. These artifacts, along with first-hand accounts from survivors and first responders, a piece of steel from the World Trade Center pulled from "Ground Zero," and artwork inspired by the tragedy, offer a poignant look into the events of that day and their aftermath.

"We are honored to bring this groundbreaking exhibition to Peoria," said Melody Konrad, assistant director of marketing and communications for the Peoria Riverfront Museum. "Through these exhibits, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of 9/11 and the resilience of the American people."

The exhibition includes personal stories from Peoria-based employees of RLI Corporations, which maintained an office in the World Trade Center North Tower. Among the tributes is a dedication to Charles "Chip" Chan, the only Peorian victim of the attacks.

On September 11, 2026, the museum will host a statewide 25th Anniversary Remembrance event at 10 a.m., led by Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger and featuring the museum board, donors, first responders, community leaders, veterans, and public officials. The Chans, parents of Charles "Chip" Chan, will also participate.

The event is free and open to the public, with tickets available on the museum's website. The exhibition, sponsored by several local and national organizations, is part of the America 250 commemoration, celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary.

"We Remember: Stories from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum" is not just an exhibition; it is a testament to the enduring spirit and unity of America, 25 years after the attacks. "This exhibition is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the resilience of the American people," added Konrad.

By bringing these stories to Peoria, the museum aims to educate and inspire future generations to remember and honor the legacy of 9/11.
