GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Advance America, a leading provider of short-term financial solutions, has released findings from a January 2026 survey of 541 U.S. adults, revealing that a significant portion of short-term borrowers are employed adults navigating a paycheck timing gap.
The survey found that 76.2% of respondents receive a steady paycheck from full-time or part-time employment, yet 87% of them have used at least one short-term borrowing method in the past six months. This indicates that even with a regular income, many Americans are struggling to manage their finances between paydays and bill due dates. Additionally, 78.6% of respondents are primarily responsible for managing their household finances.
These findings align with broader economic trends. By August 2026, U.S. inflation had risen to 3.4% year-over-year, while average hourly earnings decreased by 0.3%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A separate CNBC Affordability Survey from July 2026 reported that 63% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and 61% say their pay schedule does not align with the timing of their expenses. The cost of waiting for the next paycheck is high, as 44% of respondents said they have incurred late fees, interest, or bank overdraft charges in the past six months.
The survey also highlighted that the majority of respondents fall between the ages of 35 and 54, employed adults with mortgages and families. Roughly 80% of Advance America's survey participants are in this age group. They are using a variety of methods to bridge the gap, with 64.5% using payday loans or small-dollar loans, 29.6% using cash advance apps, 21.6% borrowing from friends or family, 17.6% taking a cash advance from a debit or credit card, and 16.8% paying a bank overdraft fee.
