More Than 100 Residents Oppose Buc-ee's Travel Center Plan

MONUMENT, Colo., Oct. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- More than 100 residents in Monument, Colorado, recently gathered to reaffirm their opposition to the proposed Buc-ee's travel center on the Palmer Divide. The community's concerns stem from the project's scale and potential impacts on traffic, public safety, and the character of the area.

The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 in August to approve the development, deeming it a permitted use under the property's C-1 commercial zoning. However, the commissioners' decision did not authorize construction. Dr. Ron Scott, spokesperson for The Community Voice, emphasized that the project is far from a done deal.

A legal challenge to the commissioners' decision remains unresolved. Filed on September 24, the complaint under Rule 106(a)(4) of the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure seeks a court review to determine if the commissioners exceeded their authority or abused their discretion. The case is pending in El Paso County District Court.

The proposed Buc-ee's development includes a 74,000-square-foot retail building and 120 fueling positions, which Scott argues does not fit the description of a "neighborhood convenience store."

El Paso County is currently reviewing Buc-ee's site development plan, which is subject to administrative review rather than another vote by the Board of County Commissioners. The review will examine whether the proposal meets applicable requirements involving traffic, roadway improvements, lighting, landscaping, parking, drainage, stormwater management, and other development standards. The review could result in required revisions, additional conditions, or denial of administrative approval if applicable standards are not met.

The Community Voice, along with other community organizations, intends to coordinate public information, review government filings, monitor legal proceedings, and share significant developments through their websites, social media platforms, and news media outreach. The organizations also encourage residents to remain informed and participate in available public comment opportunities.

The Community Voice maintains that the scale of the project, the appropriateness of the location, and whether government agencies are meeting their obligations to the public are central issues.

Community support and donations remain essential for the ongoing legal proceedings, technical reviews, public outreach, and monitoring of government decisions.

The Community Voice, a 501(c)3 citizen-focused organization, advocates for transparency, accountability, and meaningful consideration of community interests. Their website is available at www.thecommunityvoicecolorado.com.
