ATLANTA, Oct. 21, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Micron Biomedical, a clinical-stage biotech company, has secured a federal vaccine contract to develop a novel live-attenuated rotavirus vaccine delivered through the skin. This collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aims to combat rotavirus, a leading cause of death from diarrhea in children under five years old, which claims 200,000 lives annually worldwide.
The contract builds on the CDC's discovery of a promising alternative to current oral rotavirus vaccines. These oral vaccines, while highly effective in developed nations, face significant challenges in low and middle-income countries due to factors such as malnutrition and gut coinfections. These conditions contribute to lower vaccine efficacy, making the need for a new approach more urgent than ever.
Micron Biomedical's CEO, Steven Damon, expressed optimism about the potential of this new vaccine.
The new vaccine will be delivered through the skin, bypassing the digestive tract and addressing logistical barriers such as the need for refrigeration, clinician administration, and sharps waste. This approach could offer substantial time and cost advantages in vaccine development and manufacturing at a global scale. The contract is part of a broader effort by Micron Biomedical to simplify access to life-saving drugs, particularly for hard-to-reach populations.
Earlier this year, a first-in-human inactivated vaccine study marked the first CDC-sponsored clinical trial of a vaccine delivered via the skin. This study kicked off the collaboration between Micron Biomedical and the U.S. government to develop a more accessible and effective rotavirus vaccine. The company's pipeline includes other projects, such as novel biosecurity and influenza vaccines and therapeutics, as well as efforts to address weight loss and pain through its microarray technology.
Micron Biomedical's approach to developing, manufacturing, storing, transporting, and administering drugs is supported by investments from Global Health Investment Corporation (GHIC) in partnership with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as J2 Ventures and LTS Lohmann.
The contract with the CDC is a significant step forward in the fight against rotavirus, a disease that continues to claim 200,000 lives annually, primarily in children under five years old. With Micron Biomedical's innovative approach, there is hope for a more accessible and effective vaccine that could save countless lives worldwide.
