BELLE GLADE, Fla., Oct. 23, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Tampa General Hospital and the Health Care District of Palm Beach County are set to open the Lakeside Cancer Center in September 2027, marking a significant expansion of cancer care services in rural and western Palm Beach County communities. The new center, located at 15440 Tangerine Drive, Loxahatchee, will bring world-class treatment and complex care coordination directly to residents of the Glades, enhancing access to oncology specialists.

The Lakeside Cancer Center is a collaborative effort between Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. TGH, an academic health system that includes the TGH Cancer Institute and more than 30 affiliated organizations, aims to improve patient outcomes by providing advanced cancer care to communities that previously faced long travel times and limited access to specialists.

According to a 2025 Lakeside Medical Center Community Needs Assessment, cancer is the second leading cause of death in Florida and Palm Beach County. In the South Bay, Pahokee, Belle Glade, and Clewiston areas, cancer accounted for 21.6% of all deaths, exceeding both the county and statewide mortality rate. These rural communities often face additional barriers, such as financial constraints and limited access to clinical trials, making the Lakeside Cancer Center a crucial step in addressing these disparities.

The TGH Cancer Institute, known for its cutting-edge research and clinical trials, will provide the expertise needed for the Lakeside Cancer Center. The institute, led by more than 40 oncologists, has a track record of excellence, having completed over 18,000 cancer treatments and procedures and delivering more than 27,000 infusions in 2025. Additionally, the institute has 77 active clinical trials, with 271 cancer patients enrolled, underscoring its commitment to advancing cancer care.

Tampa General Hospital, Florida's premier academic health system, is recognized for its high standards of care. The hospital, which features more than 160 care locations across the state, is ranked #2 in Florida and a top 50 hospital nationally by U.S. News & World Report 2026. As the area's safety-net hospital, Tampa General provides care to anyone regardless of their ability to pay, with a net community benefit of approximately $289.1 million in fiscal year 2024.

The Lakeside Cancer Center will benefit from the expertise of TGH Cancer Institute through research and clinical trials, as well as access to care coordination for complex conditions and additional specialty services available across Tampa General Hospital's network. This partnership aims to extend the institute's expertise to the Glades, improving access to specialized cancer care while addressing the barriers to treatment faced by residents of the region.

In summary, the opening of the Lakeside Cancer Center in September 2027 is a significant step in enhancing cancer care for rural and western Palm Beach County communities. By bringing world-class treatment and complex care coordination directly to the Glades, the center will help address the unique challenges faced by these communities and improve patient outcomes.
