MICAM Milano Opens With Focus on Italian Footwear Heritage

The inauguration ceremony, which took place under the umbrella of Fashion Link Milano, highlighted the relationship between manufacturing culture, industrial capabilities, and internationalization. The event featured messages from key figures, including Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister, and Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, who emphasized the importance of the fashion sector as a cornerstone of Italy's manufacturing industry and a symbol of the country's exceptional craftsmanship.

Elena Buscemi, President of the Milan City Council, delivered institutional remarks, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the five events that make up Fashion Link Milano. The opening ceremony also marked a significant step in the candidacy of Italian Footwear Art for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. This initiative, spearheaded by Assocalzaturifici and its President Giovanna Ceolini, aims to recognize the body of knowledge, skills, practices, and traditions that underpin the creation of Italian footwear.

Giovanna Ceolini, President of MICAM and Assocalzaturifici, stated, "Manufacturing heritage is not simply what we have inherited, but what we are able to pass on and continue to evolve. The UNESCO candidacy stems precisely from the desire to recognize the value of skills and knowledge that are still alive today across our territories and businesses. This is a heritage that must continue to engage with the market, innovation, and new generations."

During the event, Davide Rampello, a university lecturer specializing in arts and crafts, and Carlo Cambi, a journalist and writer, explored the cultural value of this knowledge. Elena Lorenzini, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, also addressed the gathering. Giovanni Bozzetti, President of Fondazione Fiera Milano, officially assumed the presidency of the Supporters' Committee for the UNESCO Candidacy of Italian Footwear Art. This appointment marks a further step forward in the candidacy process and in building a network of stakeholders committed to supporting and promoting this heritage.

The opening of MICAM Milano officially marked the start of the September edition of the trade fair and, at the same time, a new chapter for the Fashion Link Milano system. The coordinated initiative brings together five events and five complementary sectors across the fashion, accessories, and technology supply chain, aiming to strengthen awareness of the cultural value of the expertise underpinning the Italian footwear supply chain and promote greater understanding of this heritage.

The event underscored the enduring importance of Italian manufacturing culture and the collective expertise that transforms it into high-quality products. As the 102nd edition of MICAM Milano opened, it served as a testament to the resilience and innovation of the Italian manufacturing sector, positioning it as a leader in the global market.
