Metbox Enables Remote Reading Without Replacing Existing Meters for EU Compliance

Metbox, a Latvian technology company founded in 2015 and based in Mārupe, has developed a solution that enables remote meter reading without the need to replace existing meters. This innovation comes as the European Union (EU) sets a 2027 deadline for individual heat meters, heat cost allocators, and domestic hot water meters in multi-apartment and multi-purpose buildings to be remotely readable.

According to the European Economic Design (EED), devices installed after 25 October 2020 were already required to be remotely readable. However, older devices must now be upgraded or replaced to meet the new standards. Metbox offers a solution that can enable remote reading for many meters already installed in European buildings, without the need for a complete replacement.

Metbox's devices support more than 150 meter models from vendors including Kamstrup, Zenner, Diehl, Danfoss, Landis+Gyr, Apator, Axioma, and QUNDIS. The supported interfaces include Wireless M-Bus (868 MHz), wired M-Bus, Modbus RS485, RS232, 4-20 mA, and NB-IoT. While not every meter can stay in place, Metbox's solutions can enable remote reading for many meters currently installed.

The company will present its solutions at Enlit Europe 2026 in Vienna, from 10 to 12 November. Metbox's platform collects readings from water, heat, electricity, and gas meters and delivers them to property managers, utilities, and residents. Beyond monthly billing data, the platform provides daily consumption data, leak and anomaly alerts, heating substation monitoring, and a customer portal where residents can view their own consumption.

SIA Metbox serves property managers, housing associations, heat and water utilities, and municipalities. Today, it has more than 18,000 connected devices and over 150 clients in Latvia and other European markets. The company's solutions help property managers get simultaneous readings across all apartments, alerts when a meter stops reporting, and early warnings of abnormal consumption such as continuous overnight water flow that indicates a leak.

Metbox offers a free compatibility check where building owners and managers can send a list of installed meter models and installation years. The company will then assess which devices can be read remotely as they are and which have to be replaced before the 2027 deadline. This service helps ensure compliance with the EU's metering requirements while minimizing costs and disruption.

In a broader context, the European Union's 2027 metering deadline aims to improve energy efficiency and transparency in the heating sector. By enabling remote meter reading, property managers can better manage energy consumption and identify potential issues early. This not only benefits the environment but also helps residents understand their energy usage and potentially reduce their bills.

As more countries and regions adopt similar regulations, solutions like those offered by Metbox will become increasingly important. The company's focus on manufacturer independence and its wide range of supported meter models make it a valuable partner for organizations looking to comply with the new standards.
