UPPSALA, Sweden, Sept. 29, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Metacon AB (publ), a Swedish developer and manufacturer of hydrogen production systems, has unveiled a new 20 MW multi-level alkaline electrolysis module. This innovative design aims to reduce the cost and footprint of large-scale hydrogen production plants, making them more economically viable in scenarios where land is limited or expensive.

The new module, which builds on the company's existing 10 MW module, features a compact multi-level steel-frame arrangement. Electrolyser stacks are positioned on the lower level, while gas-handling equipment and cooling units are placed above. This layout optimizes space usage, reducing the overall amount of steel structure, piping, insulation, and pipe supports required. According to the company, this design can significantly cut down on balance-of-plant costs, with potential savings of up to 30% on steel structures, up to 50% on piping systems, and up to 70% on area-related infrastructure compared to conventional building-based solutions.

By utilizing less space and reducing the amount of infrastructure needed, the new module serves as a super-efficient building module for large hydrogen production plants. This not only enhances the business case for projects where land is a critical factor but also simplifies the construction and assembly process. The modular design allows for easy installation and future capacity expansion, with the potential to install the modules individually or in parallel as plant capacity increases.

The new 20 MW module is part of Metacon's ongoing efforts to standardize core components, driving both cost reduction and overall quality. The company's Electrolysis business unit, in collaboration with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies, has developed this advanced electrolysis plant for large-scale hydrogen production. The Reforming business unit, on the other hand, focuses on hydrogen generation solutions based on its proprietary HIWAR® catalytic reactor technology, which produces hydrogen through catalytic steam reforming using biogas, biomethane, or other renewable feedstocks.

With these advancements, Metacon aims to make large-scale hydrogen production more accessible and economically feasible, contributing to the broader transition towards cleaner energy solutions.
