MADD Canada Unveils New PEI Memorial Monument Honoring Crash Victims

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, Sept. 19, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- MADD Canada has unveiled a new memorial monument in Prince Edward Island (PEI), creating a permanent space to honor victims of alcohol- and drug-related crashes. The monument, located at Joseph A. Ghiz Memorial Park, features the names of 12 individuals who lost their lives in such incidents. This monument is an artistic representation of PEI, designed to symbolize the impact of sudden and preventable loss. As visitors move around the monument, the shape of the Island gradually breaks apart before coming together again, reflecting the idea that families and communities are torn apart by such tragedies but also come together to share in their grief and support one another.

The unveiling ceremony included a candlelight vigil for the victims, followed by the first public viewing of the monument. Special guests, including MADD Canada National President Tanya Hansen Pratt, Cst. Stephen Duggan, Vice-Chair of MADD Canada's National Board, Philip Brown, Mayor of Charlottetown, and various government officials, attended the event. The monument is part of MADD Canada's ongoing efforts to honor the memory of those lost to impaired driving and to raise awareness about the dangers of such behavior.

Since 2009, MADD Canada has established memorial monuments for victims of alcohol- and drug-related crashes in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario. Efforts are currently underway to establish a memorial monument in British Columbia. MADD Canada, with volunteer-driven groups in close to 100 communities across Canada, aims to offer support services to victims, heighten awareness of the dangers of impaired driving, and save lives and prevent injuries on our roads.

The new PEI Provincial Memorial Monument is a significant addition to MADD Canada's work.
