Legal Action Sued AI Music Platform Suno Without Artist Consent

Chicago, September 4, 2026, Legal action is being taken against Suno, Inc., an AI music-generation platform, following the filing of a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The case, Jason Isbell et al. v. Suno, Inc., is brought on behalf of acclaimed musician Jason Isbell and other music artists who accuse Suno of commercially exploiting their identities without their consent.

According to the lawsuit, Suno has developed a platform that allows users to access a multimedia experience based on the names of musicians. This includes generating songs, descriptions of the artists' attributes, and related images. The platform covers a wide range of musical genres, including blues, rock, country, alternative, reggaeton, rap, pop, salsa, Hawaiian, ska punk, and alt-country-punk fusion.

The complaint alleges that Suno, without the consent of the musicians, created and stored voiceprints indexed by name as part of the training process for its AI. George A. Zelcs, a partner at Korein Tillery, states, "Despite Suno's claims that it did not train its AI on specific musicians' identities, its public-facing product demonstrates otherwise. Additionally, Suno's licensing agreements with major music companies explicitly recognize that a copyright license does not provide the necessary consent for the commercial exploitation of human creators' identities."

Zelcs further emphasizes, "It is time for musicians to have a seat at the table. We will work vigorously to protect their right to control the use of their own identities."
