Norco, California, Joseph “Joe” Nakamura, a 16-year veteran of the nonprofit and a silver-buckle ultrarunner, has been named the new Executive Director of 100 Mile Club, a school-based physical activity program dedicated to preventing childhood inactivity and obesity. The appointment, effective August 5, 2026, marks a new chapter in the organization’s mission to empower children and families to live healthier lives.
Nakamura, whose tenure with 100 Mile Club spans 16 years, will succeed Billie Jean “BJ” Walker. His extensive background in fitness leadership and community wellness initiatives, combined with a lifelong dedication to athletics and helping others thrive through movement, positions him well to lead the organization into the future.
“I am deeply honored to take on this role at 100 Mile Club,” said Nakamura. “The organization has been a significant part of my life for over 16 years, and I am committed to carrying forward the mission that Kara Lubin, our founder, and my good friend, began nearly 35 years ago.”
Nakamura’s journey with 100 Mile Club began in 2010 and included service on the Board of Directors from 2012 to 2025. Most recently, he led outreach, events, and strategic partnerships. His proven leadership and deep commitment to the organization’s mission are expected to provide a strong foundation for future success.
Before joining 100 Mile Club, Nakamura spent over a decade as an operating partner overseeing multiple fitness facilities and later founded a community-centered run specialty store. His experience in building programs, teams, and partnerships has equipped him to help people achieve healthier lifestyles through movement.
Nakamura’s own passion for movement began on the wrestling mat, where he earned a silver medal at the AAU National Freestyle Championships and later received an NCAA Division I athletic scholarship. His athletic pursuits today include 100-mile ultramarathons, with several sub-24-hour finishes in support of the organization. He encourages students by sharing his experience, stating, “If someone can cover 100 miles in under a day, they can accomplish so much more over a full school year.”
As a husband, father, and youth coach, Nakamura lives out the values of endurance, service, perseverance, and family health that define 100 Mile Club’s mission. He emphasizes the importance of adults setting examples for the next generation, stating, “We’re asking every parent, teacher, coach, and community member to join us because if we want the next generation to live active, healthy lives, the adults around them must set that example.”
The 100 Mile Club Board of Directors expressed its excitement at Nakamura’s appointment, highlighting his unique vantage point and experience. “We could not be more excited to have someone of Joe’s caliber and experience lead our organization,” said Michael Abel, Chair of the 100 Mile Club Board of Directors. “His proven leadership and deep commitment to our mission provide a strong foundation for our collective success.”
Walker, who will remain involved in a part-time advisory role, has been a key figure in the organization’s mission. She will support the transition to ensure a smooth transition for the program.
Since 1993, 100 Mile Club has engaged and empowered children and families to achieve healthy lifestyles through physical activity. The nonprofit aims to prevent childhood inactivity and obesity by promoting healthy habits, confidence, perseverance, and a lifelong love of movement.
