INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 04, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Hurco Companies, Inc., a leading international industrial technology firm, reported a profitable third quarter for fiscal year 2026, marking a significant turnaround from the previous year. For the period ending July 31, 2026, the company recorded a net income of $2,314,000, or $0.35 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $3,693,000, or $(0.58) per diluted share, in the same quarter of fiscal year 2025. Over the first nine months of fiscal 2026, Hurco maintained a net loss of $3,526,000, or $(0.55) per diluted share, from a loss of $12,076,000, or $(1.87) per diluted share, in the corresponding period of fiscal 2025.
Sales for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 amounted to $47,289,000, a 3% increase from the prior year, with a minor unfavorable currency impact. For the first nine months, sales rose by 4% to $137,775,000, reflecting a favorable currency impact of $3,145,000. These improvements were attributed to higher machine sales volumes in the United States and Asia Pacific, as well as a stronger mix of 5-axis and higher-performance machines, reflecting the premium placed by customers on proprietary control technology and automation.
Greg Volovic, CEO of Hurco, commented, "Last quarter, we signaled that our disciplined execution of strategic pricing and tighter cost control was beginning to show results. This quarter, we've achieved profitability, and gross margins expanded to 28%, an improvement of 800 basis points. We've seen a 24% increase in orders for the first nine months of fiscal 2026, outpacing shipments, and we're optimistic about the direction of our business. We plan to leverage our financial strength to invest in the next generation of our control technology, which will be showcased at IMTS in Chicago this month."
Orders for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 were $51,368,000, up 25% from the same quarter in fiscal 2025. Orders for the first nine months of the fiscal year rose to $154,995,000, a 24% increase compared to the previous year, driven by higher demand in the Americas and Asia Pacific. In the Americas, sales of Hurco 5-axis and larger, higher-performance milling machines, and Takumi lathes contributed to the growth. European sales, however, decreased by 12% in the third quarter and 8% over the first nine months, with a favorable currency impact in the latter period. Asian Pacific sales increased by 51% and 30% in the third quarter and first nine months, respectively, due to higher demand for Takumi machines and private labeled machine frames.
Gross profit for the third quarter was $13,183,000, or 28% of sales, up from $9,112,000, or 20% of sales, in the same quarter of fiscal 2025. For the first nine months, gross profit was $31,452,000, or 23% of sales, compared to $25,231,000, or 19% of sales, from the prior year. Selling, general, and administrative expenses increased slightly for both periods, driven primarily by unfavorable currency translation and higher global wages, sales commissions, and employee benefits.
Income tax expenses for the third quarter and the first nine months of fiscal 2026 were lower than the prior year, influenced by changes in the geographic mix of income and loss due to varying tax rates. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $52,087,000 at the end of the third quarter, up from $48,713,000 at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2025. Working capital decreased to $166,717,000 from $173,055,000, primarily due to a reduction in inventories and an increase in accounts payable and customer deposits, partially offset by higher cash and cash equivalents.
