Horizon Petroleum completes critical milestone at L7 well
CALGARY, AB, Sept. 1, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Horizon Petroleum Ltd., a Calgary-based company focused on natural gas reserves and clean energy development, has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing workover program at the Lachowice 7 ("L7") well in southern Poland. The wholly owned Polish subsidiary, Energia Karpaty Zachodnie sp.z.o.o. (EKZ), successfully completed the milling and fishing operations, removing the downhole packer and completion equipment that had been suspended since 1999.
The removal of the equipment, which took longer than anticipated due to the slower-than-expected milling process and the entry of natural gas into the wellbore, marks a crucial step in the well's reactivation. Over 200 m³ of completion fluid was lost to the formation, and natural gas was safely controlled and cleared during the operation. These fluid losses, while challenging, provide encouraging signs that the existing perforations into the Upper Devonian carbonate reservoir remain open.
"Successfully completing the milling and fishing of the packer and associated completion equipment is a critical milestone for our workover program," said Roger McMechan, Chief Operating Officer of Horizon Petroleum Ltd. "This step has removed the mechanical risks associated with re-entering and utilizing the existing wellbore, and the next major step is the successful execution of the diverted acid stimulation and subsequent production testing program."
The upcoming re-perforation, acid stimulation, and production testing program are aimed at re-establishing reservoir deliverability and assessing the well's current sustainable production capability. The L7 well has previously demonstrated significant flow potential, achieving flow rates of up to 8.9 million cubic feet of natural gas per day during testing by previous operators.
McMechan continued, "The significant fluid losses and observed gas incursion during the workover are encouraging indications that the reservoir remains gas-charged and that the existing reservoir has good deliverability potential. Successful completion of this program will provide an important step toward confirming the productive capacity of L7 and advancing the Lachowice development."
The balance of the workover program is expected to proceed as follows: - Re-perforating the naturally fractured Upper Devonian carbonate reservoir, targeting a gross reservoir interval of approximately 65 meters, with new perforations to increase reservoir contact and improve gas deliverability. - Running the final completion string and releasing the workover rig. - Conducting a diverted acid stimulation program, followed by production testing to evaluate the reservoir's sustainable flow performance. The contractor expects to be available to conduct this program during the second half of September.
Finally, the well will be temporarily suspended in preparation for future commercial production.
