Hind Bahwan Group Transitions from Rooftop Solar to Large-Scale Renewables

Sheikha Hind Bahwan, the founder and chairperson of the Hind Bahwan Group, has reflected on the company's journey in renewable energy over the past seven years. The group has transformed from small rooftop solar installations to a diverse portfolio that now includes 620 megawatts (MW) of renewable independent power producers (IPPs) and 2,500 MW of gas-fired power capacity.

The company's journey began with modest beginnings, where it installed rooftop solar panels on a small scale. These early projects allowed the group to gain a deep understanding of customer needs and the practicalities of delivering energy projects on the ground. Over time, the company expanded its capabilities, eventually delivering one of the largest rooftop solar projects in Oman. This experience laid the groundwork for the group's subsequent foray into operations and maintenance (O&M) services.

In 2015, the Hind Bahwan Group took a significant step by investing in 620 MW of renewable IPPs through Al Khadra Partners. This investment marked a pivotal moment in the company's transition towards larger-scale renewable energy projects. The group's portfolio now includes more than 45 MW of solar capacity across its EPC and O&M activities.

Sheikha Hind Bahwan emphasized that the company's approach to energy transition was built in small units, with each step preparing the group for the next.

The group's expansion into utility-scale power investments reflects the capabilities, experience, and partnerships built along the way.

Looking ahead, the company is approaching new opportunities, such as storage, green hydrogen, and the growing power demand from data centers, with the same mindset as that first rooftop project. This approach is already reflected in Al Khadra Partners' participation in the development of a large-scale green hydrogen project in Duqm, Oman.

Oman's energy transition will continue to be measured in gigawatts. As the Hind Bahwan Group operates at that scale today, it remains grounded in the lessons learned from its early projects.
