Hampton University launches D-AIX facility to shape AI future

On August 18, 2026, Hampton University officially inaugurated its Digital Artificial Intelligence Immersive Experience (D-AIX) facility, part of the university's broader initiative to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem. This new facility, along with the Hampton Artificial Intelligence and Technology Center (HTAC) and the AI and Advanced Technologies Center of Excellence, will provide students, workers, and community members with hands-on exposure to AI and emerging technologies.

Hampton's strategic move comes at a pivotal moment, as Virginia's burgeoning data center industry has transformed the state into a key backbone of the internet and the emerging AI economy. This growth has sparked discussions on energy, infrastructure, workforce development, and environmental impact. Hampton University is now adding another critical question to the national dialogue: Will the communities closest to the infrastructure of AI's revolution also have meaningful access to its opportunities?

President Darrell K. Williams '83 emphasized the university's commitment to ensuring that students and surrounding communities are not just adapting to the future but are also prepared to influence it. "This AI ecosystem initiative reinforces Hampton University's role in shaping the future of work and preparing world-ready leaders of character and consequence," Williams said.

The initiative extends beyond preparing students to use AI; it also aims to teach them to interrogate, improve, and determine the ethical use of AI. "Technical proficiency without ethical literacy is insufficient for a technology capable of influencing consequential human decisions," said Dr. Glenda Evans, executive director of Hampton University's Workforce Development Enterprise.

The D-AIX facility includes advanced visualization tools, intelligent digital guides, and immersive technology, designed to help participants understand complex concepts and explore real-world applications of AI. Interactive learning environments and collaborative workspaces allow for practical experimentation with emerging tools.

Hampton's broader strategy integrates academic programs, workforce development, research, and external partnerships into a scalable hub-based model, providing multiple points of entry into the AI economy. This includes opportunities for traditional college students, adult learners, workers seeking new skills, entrepreneurs, and members of the surrounding community.

Inside the classroom, Hampton offers a range of pathways, from introductory AI exposure to degree-level preparation. The recently launched Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning prepares students to apply techniques and tools required to build intelligent systems. The university's Department of Computer Science is integrating AI modules into core courses, moving students from general awareness toward hands-on exercises and practical assignments.

The AI Development Foundations Certification provides a non-degree pathway for individuals seeking foundational skills in emerging technology careers, expanding access beyond traditional degree-seeking students. Additionally, the Apple Community Education Initiative grant supports AI programming on campus and outreach to surrounding communities.

Hampton's influence extends beyond its campus, with faculty members contributing to Virginia's statewide examination of AI. Dr. Isi Ero-Johnson, a professor at Hampton, serves on an AI task force under Governor Glenn Youngkin's appointment. Julia Wilson, dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, has emerged as a voice on AI and communications, recognized for her expertise. Dr. Debra Haggins, the dean of Hampton's new School of Religion and the university's first female chaplain, authored a book exploring the intersection of theological education and AI.

These initiatives underscore Hampton's commitment to ensuring that HBCUs play a significant role in shaping the national AI conversation. "The next generation of AI will be shaped not only by engineers and computer scientists but also by journalists, ethicists, entrepreneurs, educators, policymakers, health professionals, researchers, and community leaders," Williams noted.

In the age of artificial intelligence, Hampton University is investing in the human infrastructure necessary to make the future more innovative and equitable. By addressing the ethical dilemmas of data and ensuring that communities have both the skills and the authority to shape AI's future, Hampton is setting a new standard for inclusive technological development.
