GOJI, a Melbourne-based digital agency, has released the Australian AI Visibility Index, a study examining how 100 Australian businesses across 10 industries appeared in 1,459 AI-generated answers captured during August 2026.

The study, which evaluated responses to 473 buyer-oriented questions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, revealed that service-industry businesses were named in 51% of the answers related to their industries. Specifically, across 149 cost-related questions involving five service industries, businesses included in the study were mentioned in eight responses, or about 5% of the total.

The research covered businesses in healthcare, real estate, building, manufacturing, and legal services, as well as those in ecommerce, supermarkets, major retail, banking, and fast-moving consumer goods. GOJI's findings highlight the importance of businesses' online presence and their visibility in AI-generated responses.

Notably, the study found that approximately 40% of business mentions in AI-generated answers did not include a direct link to the company's own website. Instead, the answers drew information from directories, review platforms, forum discussions, industry resources, and previously published news material. This suggests that businesses might need to enhance their online presence and ensure their official websites are well-documented and easily accessible.

Additionally, the study identified issues in the consistent identification of businesses as distinct entities. A business was assessed across 15 answers without being correctly identified in any of them, pointing to challenges in entity resolution by AI systems.

GOJI's Australian AI Visibility Index is intended to establish a repeatable dataset for observing how Australian businesses are represented in AI-generated answers as the use and behavior of answer engines develop. The first edition of the index was conducted under consistent testing conditions across the three AI platforms during August 2026. The methodology, which describes the selection of businesses, development of questions, and scoring of responses, is publicly available at https://goji.agency/ai-visibility-index.

This study underscores the evolving landscape of digital visibility and the importance for businesses to adapt to the increasing role of artificial intelligence in information retrieval. GOJI's initiative aims to provide insights that can help businesses improve their online presence and ensure accurate and relevant representation in AI-generated responses.
