NEW YORK, Oct. 22, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Global Action to End Smoking has announced a new grant to Phoenix House of Long Island, a nonprofit organization that provides a continuum of care for people with substance use disorders and related mental health conditions. The grant, which began in October, will provide smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction education to staff and clients across Phoenix House’s addiction and mental health programs, including a special program for veterans of the U.S. military.
Phoenix House is a long-standing organization that has been providing care to individuals with substance use disorders and related mental health conditions. The new grant will complement the organization’s existing efforts to support quitting smoking, which includes a diverse range of cessation education programs. This new grant is one of the first to educate health care providers and clients within the same organization, and it will specifically focus on reducing smoking among individuals with substance use disorders and veterans.
Dr. Kristine Torres-Lockhart, the Chief Medical Officer of Phoenix House, explained the significance of this grant.
With the support of the Global Action to End Smoking grant, Phoenix House will launch an 18-month pilot program that will provide smoking cessation and harm reduction education across its facilities in New York City and Long Island. In the first phase of the program, approximately 150 Phoenix House staff members will participate in three separate educational workshops on cessation and harm reduction. In the second phase, 200 clients will benefit from similar educational workshops.
The program will include at least one workshop tailored to serve military veterans at Phoenix House’s Lake Ronkonk house, a residential facility specializing in the treatment of those who have served in the military and are living with substance use disorders.
The measures of success for the program will include total enrollment, participation, and completion rates, reduction in cigarette use, number of people who use both reduced-risk nicotine products and cigarettes, and the number of people who completely quit.
Global Action to End Smoking is a 501(c)(3) charitable grantmaking organization with the mission to end combustible tobacco use, which remains the leading preventable cause of death globally. The organization supports all adults who smoke on their unique journeys to quit, no matter where they live or what identities they carry. They want all adults who smoke to feel respected, and they understand each person's quit journey is as unique as they are, and their trust must be earned through empathy.
