Ninestones Superabrasives Co., Ltd has released a field comparison study on the performance of conical and flat PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) cutters in hard formations. The study, which is aimed at drilling engineers, highlights the differences in performance and reliability between the two cutter geometries under real-world conditions.
In hard formations, both conical and flat PDC cutters use superhard diamond-based cutting materials, but their contact geometries create distinct interactions with the rock. Flat PDC cutters present a broad cutting face, which is efficient for shearing rock and maintaining penetration. Conical cutters, on the other hand, have a three-dimensional working profile that can concentrate contact stresses and encourage localized rock crushing or fracture initiation.
The study emphasizes that a meaningful evaluation of cutter performance should consider multiple factors, including rate of penetration (ROP), footage per bit run, cutter wear, mechanical specific energy (MSE), torque and vibration, and cost per drilled meter. These metrics help assess the reliability and efficiency of each cutter design under actual formation conditions.
In a controlled field comparison, engineers encountered abrasive sandstone with intermittent harder beds. Post-run inspections revealed that flat cutters showed signs of wear, with rounded cutting edges and localized chipping. Torque fluctuations also indicated potential impact loading contributing to the damage. In response, the bit manufacturer evaluated a conical configuration alongside the existing flat-cutter design, focusing on cutter grade, exposure, and hydraulic cleaning.
The results of the comparison will determine whether the conical configuration can reduce wear without compromising efficiency. If successful, this could lead to a more durable and cost-effective solution for drilling hard formations.
The PDC cutter market is expected to grow significantly, with the global market valued at approximately USD 14-16 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 7.27 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 6.16%. This growth is driven by the increasing demand for efficient and reliable drilling solutions in various industries, including oil and gas exploration, mining, and construction.
Ninestones Superabrasives Co., Ltd, with its professional technical research and development team, aims to contribute to this growth by offering advanced PDC cutter solutions. The company's focus on customized configurations and OEM solutions ensures that their products can meet the specific needs of different drilling applications.
