Einride and Lidl Deploy First Cab-less Autonomous Truck in Germany

Einride and Lidl have taken a significant step in the realm of autonomous logistics by deploying the first cab-less, SAE Level 4 autonomous truck on German public roads. This development marks a global milestone in the transition towards cost-efficient and sustainable freight operations.

The autonomous truck, operated by Einride, is currently transporting goods between a Lidl warehouse and distribution center and a Lidl store. This operation is permitted under the first-of-its-kind approval from Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), setting a new benchmark for autonomous logistics in the country.

Germany, with its stringent road safety regulations, is known for its rigorous approval processes. The approval granted by the KBA reflects an extensive safety validation process, confirming that the technology can operate reliably and safely under real-world conditions. This approval is a testament to the companies' commitment to innovation and their ability to bring forward-looking technology from the pilot stage to daily operations.

Thomas Dangelmayer, Head of Operational Logistics at Lidl in Germany, emphasized the importance of this initiative.

Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, expressed excitement about the deployment. "Einride is already running real autonomous deliveries with real volumes on real schedules with customers in the U.S. and Europe. Germany is one of Einride’s key markets, and we’re excited to now bring this technology to public roads in Europe's largest road transport market, and to prove its value together with Lidl and the broader ecosystem of Schwarz Group," he said.

The initiative aims to address driver shortages, secure continuity in the flow of goods, and strengthen supply chain resiliency across Lidl's network. The truck connects a Lidl warehouse and distribution center directly to a Lidl store, with plans to expand the route towards a full multi-stop milk run model.

Serhan Yildirim, Head of Schwarz Logistics Solutions at Schwarz Corporate Solutions, highlighted the broader implications of this project. "Future-proof logistics is not built by waiting, but through proactive action. With this project, we are combining the scalability of our unique ecosystem with the pioneering spirit of Einride. In doing so, we are actively driving the transformation of the industry," he stated.

The deployment of this autonomous truck is part of a larger effort by Einride and Lidl to prove that driverless daily operations can create value in one of Europe's most demanding logistics markets. The companies are committed to aligning climate action with economic competitiveness and technological sovereignty, as Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Transport, noted.

This milestone was made possible through the collaboration of Einride, Schwarz Corporate Solutions, and Schwarz Digits, along with Lidl in Germany. It aims to demonstrate the potential of autonomous and zero-emission driving, moving from a future vision to a reality on German roads.
