ORANGE, CA, UNITED STATES, November 6, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Diabetes Camping & Educational Services (DCES) recently broke ground on a new medical dormitory at Camp Conrad Chinnock, a facility dedicated to serving youth living with Type 1 diabetes. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, October 23, with the presence of California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, among other local and state leaders.
The event was a significant milestone for DCES, as it aims to enhance the camp's facilities and continue its mission of providing life-changing experiences for children and their families. According to Treasurer Ma, the new medical dormitory is crucial for attracting dedicated volunteer doctors and nurses who can provide around-the-clock care during the week-long camp sessions. This investment ensures that parents can have peace of mind while their children enjoy the joy of summer camp, friendships, and independence.
Dr. Richard Chinnock, Chief Medical Officer of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, was also in attendance. He highlighted the importance of the medical dormitory, noting that it aligns with the hospital's expansion efforts through the California Health Facilities Financing Authority. Dr. Chinnock’s father, Dr. Robert Chinnock, who was the Director of Pediatrics at Loma Linda University Hospital, established the diabetes camping program that is now honored in the camp’s name.
Camp Conrad Chinnock has been a vital resource for youth with Type 1 diabetes, offering them a unique opportunity to manage their condition while enjoying the benefits of a traditional summer camp experience. The new medical dormitory will further support the camp’s mission by providing essential medical staff accommodations, ensuring that children can focus on being kids without the constant worry of their health.
Treasurer Ma emphasized the role of public-private partnerships in supporting community organizations like DCES.
DCES is welcoming individuals, businesses, and community partners interested in supporting the medical dormitory and camp programs.
