Conversations in Color Honors 2026 Tapestry of Black Voices Award Winners

Conversations in Color, a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting the contemporary experiences and perspectives of Black communities, announced the winners of the 2026 Tapestry of Black Voices Awards. The awards, presented annually, recognize authentic conversations between everyday people that capture the experiences, values, challenges, and aspirations of Black communities. This year, the awards honored seven communities across the United States: Milledgeville, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Gastonia, North Carolina; Queens, New York; Riverside, California; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The 2026 Tapestry of Black Voices Awards, which celebrated conversations that document contemporary Black life, received 47 qualified submissions from 10 states. The awards are part of a broader initiative by Conversations in Color to encourage meaningful conversations within Black communities while creating a lasting archive of these experiences. The organization places its highest value on authenticity, meaningful conversation, and community impact, ensuring that every conversation is preserved and accessible for future generations.

Lana Reid, Founder and President of Conversations in Color, emphasized the importance of documenting the everyday voices that shape Black communities. "The people who most shape our day-to-day lives aren't celebrities," Reid stated. "They're the people in our own communities who mentor young people, build businesses, preserve family history, and show up for others every day. The people who shape our communities deserve more than recognition. They deserve to be documented. Every conversation we preserve becomes part of the historical record future generations will inherit."

A hallmark of the program is its intergenerational, national design. Each year's awards are presented by a youth host, creating space for younger generations to celebrate, learn from, and engage with the experiences and perspectives of those who came before them, while honoring the idea that every generation has something valuable to contribute. The featured conversations bring together family members, friends, mentors, and community leaders whose perspectives carry weight far beyond their own front porches.

The awards are presented during a Juneteenth livestream celebration, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States. This year's celebration highlighted the winning conversations, which represented a wide range of Black experiences and aspirations.

As Conversations in Color prepares for the 2027 Tapestry of Black Voices Awards, the organization hopes even more communities will recognize the importance of documenting the meaningful conversations that unfold in neighborhoods across the country. The 2026 program’s success underscores the organization’s commitment to preserving the voices of the people living these experiences, ensuring that they remain accessible for future generations.
