China Leads Global Cloud Native Adoption in Industrial Internet Developers

China’s cloud native development is on the rise, according to new research released by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and SlashData. The report, titled "State of Cloud Native Development in China," highlights that China’s industrial internet developers are leading global adoption rates of cloud native technologies, with 48% of IIoT developers adopting these practices compared to the global average of 42%.

The findings reveal that China is home to approximately 1.75 million cloud native developers, including around 400,000 who specialize in AI. This robust ecosystem is supporting the growing AI infrastructure, with developers moving from experimentation and training toward production inference. The research underscores the importance of cloud native technologies in defining the infrastructure for AI, as inference scales and challenges such as scheduling, isolation, networking, and observability become more pronounced.

The report also notes that China’s younger generation of backend developers is quickly embracing cloud native practices. Approximately 58% of backend developers under 25 are classified as cloud native, compared to 30% two years ago. This trend highlights the integration of cloud native as a fundamental part of modern software development among the next wave of developers.

As AI systems mature, the report outlines a distinct path that developers follow in adopting cloud native infrastructure technologies. For data pipeline operations, Kubernetes and microservices provide the foundational layer, followed by event-driven architecture, streaming services, and observability tools. In the training and experimentation phase, feature flagging, remote procedure calls (RPC), and immutable infrastructure support model version routing, distributed training, and reproducible environments. For production serving, service meshes, chaos engineering, and multicluster management enable traffic splitting, resilience testing, and distributed inference at scale.

Chris Aniszczyk, CTO of CNCF, emphasized, "AI is moving quickly, but cloud native is defining the open-source infrastructure that will support it in production at scale. China has a strong open-source developer community that can play an important role in that work. As inference scales, many of the challenges look familiar to cloud native, scheduling, isolation, networking, observability, and operating distributed systems reliably. Bridging these communities together is how we build an open AI infrastructure stack that developers can contribute to, build on, and run anywhere."

The research further highlights the growing importance of platform engineering in how developers interact with underlying cloud native infrastructure. Eighty-eight percent of backend developers now work with some form of infrastructure standardization, up from 80% six months ago. As platforms abstract technologies such as Kubernetes and containers, the underlying infrastructure becomes more critical to production workloads, even if it is less visible to developers.

The report identifies the strongest technology associations in the dataset between immutable infrastructure and chaos engineering, with a lift of 2.22, indicating that these two practices are adopted together at more than twice the rate. This "elite cluster" also includes multicluster management and service meshes, reflecting how developers operating complex systems adopt multiple advanced infrastructure practices.

Liam Bollmann-Dodd, principal market research consultant at SlashData, commented, "China's developer ecosystem offers an important view into how cloud native adoption is evolving alongside AI and industrial development. The strong adoption among younger backend developers points to cloud native becoming an increasingly established part of modern software development, while our global AI findings show how these infrastructure practices evolve as teams progress toward increasingly sophisticated production AI systems."
