NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Bernstein Private Wealth Management has unveiled a new digital tool designed to help nonprofit organizations evaluate their financial health and strengthen communication with stakeholders. The Nonprofit Financial Health Assessment tool, available through Bernstein Advisors starting September 23, aims to provide nonprofits and their boards with a structured way to assess financial health, identify strengths and risks, and inform strategic planning.

The tool evaluates six quantitative metrics: administrative ratio, operating surplus as a percentage of assets, months of spending, primary reserve ratio, debt margin, and debt service coverage ratio. These metrics are compared against national nonprofit benchmarks tailored to organizations of similar sizes. Additionally, the assessment considers three qualitative factors: revenue diversification, endowment strategy, and board governance. The resulting evaluation helps leaders identify strengths, vulnerabilities, and priorities, ultimately enhancing transparency with donors.

Rick Meyers, Executive Managing Director and Head of Client and Advisory at Bernstein, emphasized the importance of the tool in the current landscape of legislative and economic uncertainty.

The Nonprofit Financial Health Assessment complements Bernstein's existing Reserves Analysis Tool, which helps nonprofit boards evaluate appropriate cash reserve levels based on revenue, spending, timing, and borrowing risks. Together, these tools offer a comprehensive view of financial resilience, with the Reserves Analysis Tool supporting forward-looking reserve decisions and the Nonprofit Financial Health Assessment offering a broader diagnostic across operations, liquidity, debt management, revenue diversification, endowment readiness, and board governance.

According to Marisa Swystun, Senior National Director of Bernstein's Foundation and Institutional Advisory practice, the tool is a response to the increasing complexity of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector.

The research analyzed data from over 800,000 IRS Form 990s, reviewed existing academic literature, and conducted seven in-depth case studies to identify best practices. The resulting benchmarked nonprofit reporting serves as a strong evaluation and stewardship resource.

For nearly 60 years, Bernstein has provided holistic advice to nonprofits, private foundations, philanthropists, and board leaders on investment management, planning, and specific needs. The company's Foundation and Institutional Advisory team supports more than 1,000 organizations nationwide with expertise, research, and custom tools for fundraising, governance, operations, and long-term planning. As of June 30, 2026, Bernstein manages $167 billion in assets under management.
