Athena Alliance, the first career care ecosystem for high-achieving women, has published a groundbreaking market definition for 'career care,' a category designed to support the needs of a 60-year working life. This definition comes at a critical time when the landscape of career development is shifting from employer-provided training to individual responsibility.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, by 2030, 170 million new roles will be created, while 92 million will be displaced. Additionally, the report estimates that 39% of workers’ existing skills will become outdated or transformed within five years. This rapid change underscores the need for a robust career care ecosystem that can adapt to the evolving demands of the workforce.
At the same time, a significant portion of the U.S. workforce is planning to extend their working lives. Thirty-seven percent of U.S. workers, including 57% of Baby Boomers, expect to retire at 70 or later, or not at all. This trend highlights the importance of staying professionally engaged to support brain health, mental wellbeing, and a sense of purpose.
Coco Brown, Founder and CEO of Athena Alliance, emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive career care system.
Athena Alliance's definition of a career care ecosystem includes six key capabilities: 1. Context: The ecosystem is tailored to the specific stage of life and career it serves, providing each person with a named human who holds their story and sees what technology can’t. 2. Construction: This involves portfolio construction tooling to compose, track, and rebalance a portfolio as goals and circumstances change, and learning chosen against an individual plan so people are ready ahead of the need. 3. Connection: Architected serendipity that creates the conditions for unexpected connections across circles, and a curated peer community where trust grows through every way people connect, in person and virtually, loosely or with deep structure.

This new framework aims to address the challenges posed by the changing nature of work and the increasing responsibility placed on individuals to manage their career development. By providing a structured approach to career care, Athena Alliance seeks to empower workers to navigate the complexities of a long and evolving working life.
