APRO Wins TSAE Award for Rent-to-Own Knowledge Initiative

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 22, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- APRO, the national trade association representing the rent-to-own (RTO) industry, has been honored with the 2026 TSAE Association Impact Award for its Generative Knowledge Initiative. This recognition marks a significant milestone for APRO, which has been advocating for the RTO industry for over four decades.

APRO's Generative Knowledge Initiative aims to provide clear, accurate information about rent-to-own transactions to both consumers and legislators. The initiative includes rebuilding the association's website and expanding access to public educational resources. A key component is the Rent-to-Own 101 Knowledge Base, which addresses common questions about rental-purchase agreements, ownership options, and consumer protections.

The session explored how associations can use artificial intelligence to improve the accuracy of information people find about their industries online.

Through the Generative Knowledge Initiative, APRO has digitized more than 3,000 historical industry articles, spanning decades of history. The initiative also includes an ongoing Human Impact of Rent-to-Own project, which captures firsthand customer and employee experiences.

The U.S. rent-to-own industry serves over 6.7 million households annually, according to APRO's 2026 Rent-to-Own Industry Health Survey. Rent-to-own, also known as lease-to-own, is a rental transaction that allows customers to obtain durable household goods immediately through renewal payments with the option to obtain ownership over time. Unlike traditional financing, rental-purchase agreements do not involve borrowing money or taking on long-term debt.

APRO's Generative Knowledge Initiative has also garnered recognition from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), which awarded the organization a 2026 Power of Associations Award. Smitherman presented on the initiative at ASAE's Annual Meeting & Exposition in Indianapolis in August.

Bill Keese, former APRO executive director, past TSAE board chairman, and former member of the Texas House of Representatives, attended the awards luncheon to celebrate the recognition and congratulate the APRO team. Keese's presence underscores the significance of the award and the association's commitment to improving public understanding of the rent-to-own industry.

APRO's efforts to expand public access to accurate rent-to-own information are crucial in an era where misinformation can have significant consequences. By leveraging technology and engaging with the broader community, APRO is setting a new standard for transparency and education in the RTO industry.
