JERUSALEM, Oct. 22, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Alpha Tau Medical Ltd., the developer of the innovative alpha-radiation cancer therapy Alpha DaRT®, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Samsung Medical Center (SMC) in Seoul, South Korea. The MOU outlines a potential clinical trial for pancreatic cancer patients, marking Alpha Tau’s first such trial in the country. SMC, ranked fifth in the world and number one in Korea for oncology, is a leading medical center with a multidisciplinary team and a high-volume surgical program that has performed more than 4,000 pancreatectomies for pancreatic cancer between 2008 and 2025.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in Korea, ranking as the fourth leading cause of cancer death. The disease’s death rate has risen by over 6% annually since 2025, the steepest increase among major cancers. Only about one in five Korean pancreatic cancer patients undergo surgery, and the five-year relative survival rate stands at 17.0%, the lowest of any cancer in the country. Fewer than one in six patients are diagnosed while the cancer is still confined to the pancreas, and more than four in ten are diagnosed only after it has already spread to distant organs.
Alpha Tau Medical Ltd., founded in 2016, is an Israeli oncology therapeutics company focused on the research, development, and potential commercialization of Alpha DaRT®. The technology, initially developed by Prof. Itzhak Kelson and Prof. Yona Keisari from Tel Aviv University, is designed to enable highly potent and conformal alpha-irradiation of solid tumors by intratumoral delivery of radium-224 impregnated sources. When the radium decays, its short-lived daughters are released from the sources and disperse while emitting high-energy alpha particles to destroy the tumor.
The MOU with Samsung Medical Center is a significant step forward for Alpha Tau in its goal to bring Alpha DaRT® to cancer patients worldwide. With Korea, the company’s pancreatic cancer program could potentially span six countries across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Uzi Sofer, CEO of Alpha Tau, expressed gratitude for SMC’s confidence and the opportunity to explore the potential of Alpha DaRT® to benefit its patients. Hee-Chul Kim, EVP of Samsung Medical Center and General Director of the Samsung Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), stated that the MOU could help explore new possibilities for pancreatic cancer patients and that the center would carefully review the clinical application of Alpha DaRT®.
Samsung Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) has a rich history, guided by respect for life and a commitment to excellence in patient care, research, and education. The center has established several centers of excellence, including the Supportive Care Center (2014), the Proton Therapy Center (2016), the CAR T-Cell Therapy Center (2021), and the Precision Oncology Therapeutics Center (2022). In 2023, SCCC signed MOUs with Gustave Roussy and Charité to strengthen its global collaboration, and in 2024, it opened the Institute for Quality of Life in Cancer. In 2026, SCCC achieved ICHOM Level 1 accreditation and signed an MOU with EORTC. SMC was ranked fifth in the world and first in Korea for oncology in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027.
Alpha Tau Medical Ltd. is a company focused on developing innovative cancer therapies. The release states that the Alpha DaRT® treatment has not yet been approved for commercialization or for use outside of approved clinical trials. The company is currently exploring the potential of Alpha DaRT® to benefit pancreatic cancer patients in Korea and beyond, with the potential for future applications and uses. Alpha Tau’s commitment to advancing cancer treatment through innovative technologies is evident in its collaboration with Samsung Medical Center, a leading oncology center in South Korea.
