Alpha Genesis, a leading preclinical contract research organization and the largest nonhuman primate research center in the United States, has launched AGI Ventures, a strategic investment and venture-development division focused on emerging biotechnology companies. The new initiative aims to support these companies through a combination of research services and strategic investment, with an initial $50 million commitment.
AGI Ventures is designed to assist biotech companies that are poised to make significant progress with their therapeutic concepts but need to generate compelling preclinical data. The program combines financial investment with scientific expertise, study design, and preclinical execution, providing a pathway from concept to the data required for further development.
"We are excited to launch AGI Ventures to support the next generation of biotech companies," said Xavier Westergaard, Ph.D., President of Alpha Genesis. "Our goal is to be a strategic partner that can help companies overcome key development hurdles and advance their research into the clinic."
AGI Ventures will offer companies access to Alpha Genesis’s scientific and preclinical research infrastructure. This includes capabilities in rodent and nonhuman primate models, covering early proof-of-concept, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), biomarker development, toxicology, and IND-enabling studies.
The process begins with companies submitting a non-confidential overview of their technology and development program. Alpha Genesis scientists evaluate the science and development opportunity and, if selected, work with the company to develop a preclinical plan. This plan covers model selection, study design, endpoints, and the data package required to reach the next major milestone.
AGI Ventures then develops an investment and research structure tailored to each program. Alpha Genesis conducts the agreed research, while AGI Ventures can remain involved as the company progresses into follow-on studies, financing and partnering discussions, and IND-enabling development. Investment structures are determined on a company-by-company basis and may include reduced or deferred study fees, research credits, equity investments, warrants, milestone-based payments, or other negotiated arrangements.
"AGI Ventures brings a unique combination of scientific insight and financial support to the biotech sector," Westergaard added. "We are looking for companies that have a strong scientific foundation and a clear path to the clinic, and we are committed to helping them achieve their goals."
