Agentic AI Foundation Launches MCPA Certification

The Agentic AI Foundation has launched the Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) certification, the first official credential designed to validate the expertise of engineers and platform builders in understanding and implementing the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This certification marks a significant step in ensuring that professionals in the agentic AI space have a standardized way to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

MCP is a protocol that connects AI models to the tools and services they need, enabling the creation of agentic systems. With the protocol's growing adoption, the need for a common understanding of its architecture, security, and implementation has become critical. According to the Agentic AI Foundation, MCP's usage has surged, with monthly downloads of Tier 1 SDKs approaching half a billion, and both the TypeScript and Python SDKs surpassing 1 billion downloads in total.

The MCPA certification covers five key domains: MCP Fundamentals, Architecture & Components, Interactions & Execution, Security & Governance, and Use Cases & Ecosystem. Candidates are tested on their understanding of MCP hosts, clients, servers, and tools; message flow and protocol primitives; trust boundaries, permissions, and risk controls; and the application of MCP in real-world agentic deployments. The exam is a 120-minute, online, proctored, multiple-choice test, with a focus on the latest MCP specification release, 2026-07-28.

David Soria Parra, co-creator and lead maintainer of MCP, emphasized the importance of the certification. "We built MCP so developers could rely on one open protocol instead of writing custom integrations for every system. Since then, it has grown exponentially. Giving developers the option to earn a certification in MCP will formalize a shared understanding of how the protocol works, while ensuring this expanding ecosystem continues to operate smoothly."

Angie Jones, Vice President of Developer Experience at the Agentic AI Foundation, highlighted the practical benefits of the certification. "MCP has quickly become the standard for connecting AI agents to external systems. As organizations increasingly adopt agentic AI, they need developers who understand how those connections work and how to implement them responsibly, including the permissions and trust boundaries involved. With the MCPA, developers can demonstrate that knowledge through an official certification, giving employers a shared benchmark for assessing the skills required for modern software development."

The MCPA certification is now live and open for enrollment. Individuals attending AGNTCon + MCPCon Europe in Amsterdam this week can enroll at a 20% discount, and the same discount is available to those registering for AGNTCon + MCPCon North America, taking place October 22-23, 2026, in San Jose, California.
