On September 8, 2026, the national day of awareness known as 988 Day, Vibrant Emotional Health, the nonprofit administrator of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, joined the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and communities across the country in highlighting the importance of mental health support. This year, the theme "988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough" encourages individuals to seek help whenever they need it, whether they are in crisis or simply feeling overwhelmed.
Vibrant Emotional Health, which has been providing confidential emotional support through its state-of-the-art contact center and crisis hotline services since 1971, has seen significant growth since the transition to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in July 2022. According to the organization, the 988 Lifeline has already handled nearly 30 million calls, texts, and chats, connecting people with trained crisis counselors for mental health and substance misuse support and resources.
"988 Day is an opportunity to remind everyone that support is just three digits away," said Wendy Martinez Farmer, Interim Program Director of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at Vibrant Emotional Health. "We want to ensure that no one faces a difficult moment alone, and that support is accessible to all."
Vibrant Emotional Health encourages its partners, advocates, and supporters to help spread awareness of the 988 Lifeline. The organization provides a 988 Day Toolkit, which includes ready-to-use content, graphics, and other resources to help individuals and communities promote the 988 Lifeline and its mission. By sharing content from the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Vibrant Emotional Health social media channels, and creating their own posts, individuals can help raise awareness and encourage others to seek support when needed.
The 988 Lifeline is a crucial part of the country's behavioral health infrastructure, providing timely and compassionate support to those in need. Dr. Cara A. McNulty, Chief Executive Officer of Vibrant Emotional Health, emphasized the importance of making mental health support accessible to everyone. "The 988 Lifeline has become an essential service, and its continued growth reflects the fundamental truth that people deserve support when and where they need it," said McNulty.
As the 988 Lifeline continues to grow, Vibrant Emotional Health remains committed to its mission of helping individuals and families achieve emotional wellbeing. Through its community wellness programs and advocacy and education initiatives, the organization aims to promote mental well-being as a social responsibility. With the support of its partners and the broader community, Vibrant Emotional Health is working to ensure that everyone has the support they need to thrive.
