ROME, Sept. 23, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The travel industry is experiencing a significant shift, with 85.4% of travelers opting for day trips over city tours, according to new data from The Tour Guy. This trend, which has seen a 110.7% year-over-year increase in bookings, marks a clear adaptation to the crowded and popular destinations that have become the norm.

Travelers are increasingly looking beyond the well-trodden paths of iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, the Louvre, or the Uffizi, instead choosing to explore the countryside, seaside, and natural landscapes just outside city limits. This shift is evident in The Tour Guy's booking data, which shows a substantial rise in day trip bookings across Europe.

The data reveals that 64.9% of respondents prefer day trips because they are curious to see the natural beauty and local attractions outside the city. Another 53.4% of travelers have a specific attraction in mind that lies just beyond the city limits. Only 8.5% of travelers choose day trips simply to take a break from the city.

Innovative experiences are driving this trend, with one in four day trips sold this year being new experiences that weren't available in the previous year. For instance, The Tour Guy has introduced a new archaeologist tour in Pompeii, which pairs the ruins with the geology of Mt. Vesuvius, guided by an archaeologist and a volcanologist. Similarly, a tour in the Italian region of Chianti, once folded into a broader Tuscany itinerary, is now dedicated entirely to wineries, offering a sharper focus on the local experience.

The three fastest-growing day trips are also among the most recognizable names. The trip to Sintra from Lisbon and the visit to the Tuscany villages from Rome have registered a quadruple-digit growth in bookings. The trip to Mont-Saint-Michel from Paris follows closely as the third fastest-growing day trip. These destinations, while familiar, are now being explored in new and innovative ways.

He believes that by offering new and unique experiences, the travel industry can continue to thrive and meet the evolving needs of travelers.

As millions of travelers prepare to visit Europe on World Tourism Day, the data suggests that their next big destination might already be on the map, just waiting for someone to look at it differently. The Tour Guy's findings indicate a clear trend towards day trips, driven by a desire for new and innovative experiences in familiar destinations.
