Zephyr Project Grows with Seven New Silver Members

The Zephyr Project, an open-source initiative at the Linux Foundation, celebrates its 10th anniversary by expanding its global embedded ecosystem with the addition of seven new Silver members. These include Canonical, Dojo Five, GigaDevice, Morse Micro, Northern.tech, Siemens, and Space Cubics. The growth underscores the project’s expanding role as a secure, vendor-neutral foundation for the development of next-generation connected devices and industrial automation.
The newly welcomed members bring deep expertise across the entire embedded product lifecycle, from firmware architecture and connectivity to security, testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance. This expertise is crucial as more companies build resource-constrained devices on Zephyr, contributing to the ecosystem's expansion.
To honor the contributions of the community, the Zephyr Project introduced its first-ever Community Awards. These awards recognize developers, maintainers, and community members who have significantly shaped the project over the past decade. The winners will be announced at the upcoming Zephyr Developer Summit, which will take place alongside the Open Source Summit Europe in Prague from October 7 to 9.
"Over the last decade, Zephyr has evolved to become a foundational technology that companies are relying on for the long term," said Kate Stewart, vice president of dependable embedded systems at the Linux Foundation. "The new members bring investment and expertise, while developers contribute real-world experience in building products. Our maintainers then turn this collaboration into technology that the entire ecosystem uses."
Canonical, a key player in the open-source community, expressed its commitment to Zephyr by joining the project. "Zephyr represents the kind of open, vendor-neutral collaboration the embedded industry needs as devices get smaller and more connected. It has become foundational infrastructure for connected devices, and Canonical wants to help shape where it goes next," said Jonathan Beri, Head of Product for IoT at Canonical.
Dojo Five, another new member, echoed this sentiment. "Over the past decade, Zephyr has demonstrated what embedded development can become when openness, portability, and community replace fragmented approaches. Dojo Five joined the Zephyr Project to strengthen this foundation and make it easier for product teams to confidently build, verify, deploy, and maintain production-ready embedded systems," said Joe Schneider, Founder and CEO of Dojo Five.
GigaDevice, a global leader in microcontroller (MCU) technology, also joined the project. "Open source ecosystem expansion is critical for GigaDevice's GD32 MCU global business. Joining the Zephyr Project as a Silver Member enables us to deepen community collaboration and deliver a more streamlined development experience for worldwide IoT and industrial developers," said Vincent Li, SVP and General Manager of the MCU Business Unit at GigaDevice.
Morse Micro, known for its Wi-Fi HaLow technology, joined the Zephyr Project to complement its platform-agnostic design. "Zephyr's leading open-source real-time operating system for embedded platforms is highly complementary to our Wi-Fi HaLow technology, enabling developers to easily build secure, low-power, long-range connected devices," said Michael De Nil, Co-founder and CEO of Morse Micro.
Northern.tech, a company that supports software updates for Zephyr-based microcontrollers, believes in the growing need for reliable software management throughout the entire product lifecycle. "By joining the Zephyr Project, we aim to contribute our experience in robust and secure software updates to help ensure connected devices are more reliable and maintainable throughout their lifetime," said Thomas Ryd, CEO of Northern.tech.
Siemens, a global leader in industrial automation, also joined the project to leverage Zephyr’s secure, scalable, and modular real-time operating system. "By actively contributing to this vibrant ecosystem, we aim to accelerate digital transformation and ensure our embedded solutions meet the highest standards of reliability, security, and open innovation for our customers worldwide," said Dominik Tacke, Principal Key Expert at Siemens.
Space Cubics, a company focused on radiation-tolerant computing, aims to contribute its experience in space-grade hardware and help make open-source software a practical foundation for space missions. "By joining the Zephyr Project, we look forward to expanding upstream support for space-grade hardware and helping make open-source software a practical foundation for missions in Earth orbit, on the Moon, and beyond," said Yasushi Shoji, Co-founder and CEO of Space Cubics, Inc.
