Würth Elektronik implements PeerGFS to enhance global engineering collaboration

News provided byWürth Elektronik · 2 min read

Global electronics manufacturer Würth Elektronik has successfully implemented Peer Software's PeerGFS solution, significantly enhancing collaboration and data integrity among its engineering teams across North America, Europe, and Asia. The deployment addresses the growing challenges of managing large datasets and ensuring seamless global cooperation, ultimately boosting productivity and operational resilience.

Würth Elektronik, employing approximately 2,000 staff members across the United States, Germany, and China, relies heavily on engineering teams collaborating in multiple locations. The company uses AutoCAD and SolidWorks for its critical design and engineering work. As data volumes expanded and collaboration across continents intensified, Würth Elektronik faced the risk of version conflicts and data corruption, which could delay projects and compromise the integrity of shared engineering files.

Greg Foley, IT Manager at Würth Elektronik, explained the company's need for a robust solution: "Performance wasn't our only concern. File integrity was equally critical. When engineers in different regions access the same files simultaneously without proper file locking, conflicting versions can corrupt work, delay projects, and undermine confidence in shared data. We needed a solution that could enforce consistent file locking across every server location, not just within a single site."

PeerGFS, Peer Software’s enterprise file service, met Würth Elektronik’s requirements by synchronizing approximately 800 GB of active engineering data in real time across four Windows-based file servers spanning three continents. The platform offers distributed file locking to prevent conflicting edits, centralized management, and built-in high availability. This ensures project teams can collaborate without delays or data integrity concerns.

According to Jimmy Tam, CEO of Peer Software, "Engineering organizations can't afford to have productivity slowed by waiting for files or dealing with version conflicts. Global manufacturers need their data available where work is happening while maintaining a single source of truth. We're proud to help Würth Elektronik deliver that experience for its engineering teams around the world."

Prior to deploying PeerGFS, engineers at Würth Elektronik faced significant delays, with file access times exceeding five minutes. Now, they can access local replicas that load in seconds, dramatically improving productivity while ensuring reliable file locking across regions. This reduces the risk of costly rework caused by overlapping changes.

The deployment has also enhanced operational resilience. In the event of a server failure in China, PeerGFS automatically synchronized current files back to the restored system after it reconnected, allowing Würth Elektronik to recover without data loss or manual intervention. This feature is crucial for maintaining business continuity and minimizing downtime.

In summary, Würth Elektronik’s adoption of PeerGFS has not only improved the efficiency and reliability of its engineering operations but also strengthened its ability to handle unexpected technical issues. The solution’s ability to provide local-speed file access while ensuring file integrity across multiple continents sets a new standard for global engineering collaboration.
