Wix faces legal challenge over AI product overstated claims
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 1, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Wix.com Ltd., a leading global web development platform, faces a significant legal challenge following a sharp drop in its stock price. On May 12, 2026, Wix reported its Q1 2026 financial results, which led to a 27% decline in its share price. This drop, coupled with unexpected operating expenses that spiked 46% year-over-year, has raised questions about the company's financial health and its ability to defend its core business.
The case, named Yappi v. Wix.com Ltd., et al., has been filed in the Northern District of Illinois. The lawsuit seeks to represent investors who purchased or otherwise acquired Wix securities between February 19, 2025, and May 12, 2026. National shareholders' rights firm Hagens Berman is leading the investigation and urging affected investors to contact the firm to discuss their rights.
Hagens Berman, known for its work in corporate accountability, highlights that Wix may have violated federal securities laws. The firm claims that Wix overstated the competitiveness and performance of its AI product offerings, Base44 and Harmony, while underestimating the costs associated with their development and promotion. This, according to the firm, led to an overstatement of commercial and financial benefits.
The revelation of these issues came in several stages. In May 2025, Wix provided 2025 revenue guidance that fell short of analyst expectations, sparking concerns about the company's competitiveness. In November 2025, Wix reported its Q3 2025 results, which indicated rising costs associated with the post-Base44-acquisition, particularly in AI compute and marketing, had a significant negative impact on its financial results. These factors led to sharp sell-offs in the stock price and subsequent analyst downgrades, raising doubts about the company's growth trajectory and competitive positioning.
On May 13, 2026, Wix revealed that the rapid expansion of Base44 and Harmony had dramatically altered its cost structure, primarily through front-loading sales and marketing expenses. This drove non-GAAP S&M expenses to $190.7 million, a year-over-year increase of 88%, causing the company's non-GAAP operating margin to collapse from 21% to just 5%. Quarterly operating expenses also surged by 46% compared to the prior year period.
During an earnings call that day, Wix management acknowledged that professional developers were using competing AI tools, the Harmony platform had "holes" and "missing capabilities," and there had been delays in delivering product updates and innovation to these customers, resulting in Wix falling behind their workflows and needs.
Reed Kathrein, a partner at Hagens Berman, stated, "We're investigating whether Wix may have intentionally understated the adverse effects of its AI initiatives on its operating results." He urged investors who had substantial losses or knowledge that could assist in the investigation to contact the firm.
