West Red Lake Gold, a mining company based in Ontario, Canada, has announced promising results from its first phase of drilling at the historic Starratt-Olsen Mine. The company is pursuing a hub-and-spoke growth strategy, with the Madsen Mine serving as the central processing hub for multiple high-grade deposits across the Red Lake District.
The drilling program, which involved 12 holes over a total of 4,100 meters, focused on testing the upper portions of the Starratt system from surface. The results from Hole WRL26-054 were particularly encouraging, intersecting 1.5 meters of rock containing 16.16 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold, including a 0.85-meter section with 24.60 g/t gold. Another hole, WRL26-055, returned 4.5 meters of rock grading 5.16 g/t gold, with a 1.5-meter section containing 10.94 g/t gold.
Will Robinson, Vice President of Exploration at West Red Lake Gold, commented on the significance of these findings. "The results from this first pass of modern drilling at the past-producing Starratt-Olsen Mine are highly encouraging. We have successfully demonstrated that Madsen-style mineralization of notable grades and thickness remains proximal to the historically mined areas."
The Starratt-Olsen Mine, first staked in 1926, was in operation from 1948 to 1956, producing 163,990 ounces of gold at an average grade of 6.17 grams per tonne. The mine site once supported a small town for employees and their families, and the area remains one of the six main communities that make up the Municipality of Red Lake.
Robinson noted that the exploration team sees significant potential to continue exploring the main Starratt ore shoot at depth. "Gold grades in excess of 10 g/t Au from numerous underground drilling and chip samples collected near the shaft bottom at Starratt suggest this system continues down-plunge. This high-grade panel is further reinforced by a 2016-era drillhole that returned 2m at 27.3 g/t Au and 3m at 104.1 g/t Au with numerous occurrences of visible gold."
West Red Lake Gold is advancing several projects under its hub-and-spoke strategy. The Madsen Mine is already in production, with the company planning to include the Starratt-Olsen Mine in its 2027 production profile. The Rowan Project, located within trucking distance of the Madsen mill, has also seen significant progress. An updated 2026 Mineral Resource Estimate for the Rowan Project revealed an increase in Indicated gold ounces to 335,058 ounces at 13.04 g/t gold, a 70% increase from the previous year.
The company's Q2, 2026 financial and operating results showed a 51% increase in gold production to 8,576 ounces, while gold sales increased by 34% to 8,260 ounces. The exploration team is already looking into ways to potentially access the high-grade area from the Madsen 16 Level exploration drive, which was advanced towards Starratt at 800 meters depth during the late 1930s and gets within 200 meters of the main down-plunge extension.
With these promising results, West Red Lake Gold is well-positioned to continue expanding its operations and exploring the broader mineralized system in the Red Lake District.
