Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Secures $1 Million Milestone Payment from Bayer

Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. has achieved a significant milestone in its collaboration with Bayer AG, securing a $1 million payment from the German pharmaceutical giant. This success comes after Voyageur completed the first phase of its feasibility study for iodine production, using its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Voyageur Pharmaceuticals has been working on developing a domestic source of high-purity iodine, a critical component in medical imaging contrast agents. The company's Houston R&D team has validated the efficiency of its Mueller process, producing 99.8% pure iodine from wastewater generated in the Anadarko Basin. This technical breakthrough has been crucial in securing Bayer’s approval and, consequently, the payment.

The project involves the construction of a transportable pilot plant, which is nearing completion. Once operational this fall, the plant will provide field data necessary for the final feasibility study. This phase, expected to commence upon the plant’s field operation, will further validate the process and determine the viability of scaling up production.

Bayer’s commitment to non-dilutive funding demonstrates its confidence in Voyageur’s technology. The initial $350,000 payment on March 31, 2026, and the recent $1 million milestone payment bring the total committed funds from Bayer to $1,350,000. This capital will support Fluor Corporation, a leading global engineering, procurement, and construction firm, as it progresses through the feasibility engineering phases.

Fluor is currently supporting Voyageur with engineering and thermodynamic modeling, working on the FEL-2 (Concept Design) and FEL-3 (Basic Design) phases. These phases are critical for defining the practical demonstration-scale configuration of the modular Field Unit and Central Hub architecture, which are essential for the project’s success.

The company’s business model envisions a vertically integrated strategy to improve supply-chain security and reduce reliance on imported raw materials. The global contrast media market, estimated at approximately $7.06 billion, stands to benefit from such innovations. Voyageur aims to become a key player by producing its own barium and iodine, ensuring quality and cost efficiency.

Voyageur also owns the Frances Creek barium sulfate (barite) project, believed to offer a high-grade mineral suitable for the pharmaceutical marketplace. The company’s plans include the staged production rollout, starting with a 200-tonne-per-year iodine extraction unit. Upon successful testing, Voyageur may expand this to 1,000 tonnes per year, with plans for a central iodine manufacturing facility.

With the support of Bayer and Fluor, Voyageur is well-positioned to advance its iodine production strategy and potentially establish a domestic supply chain for medical imaging contrast agents. The company intends to continue providing updates on the feasibility work’s progress and any additional technical milestones achieved.
